Meta CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg announced on his Facebook account on Tuesday that Meta Connect 2022 will take place on October 11. In the same post, the CEO also revealed a new image of Project: Cambria. Cambria is the long-awaited sequel to Meta Quest.

What is Meta Connect?

Meta Connect, officially called Facebook Connect, is Meta’s annual online showcase event highlighting the company’s technology updates and roadmap.

Last year’s Meta Connect was notable, as the Menlo Park-based company publicly changed its name to Meta for the first time.

The event also saw Meta shift its focus from social media, where it was founded, to immersive Web3 technology and software.

The Menlo Park-based company set itself new goals to create new XR technology and gain a foothold in the Metaverse.

Because of last year’s Connect event, Metaverse technology suddenly became popular. During the presentation, the company introduced its vision of seeing the Metaverse as an immersive social space where users can work and socialize.

Since that event last year, the company has launched Horizons Metaverse globally. Meta also uses the nascent service as its own testbed, allowing budding immersive developers to design and distribute Metaverse content on the service platform. The company also supports Horizon developers through a series of XR grants and boot camps.

What is Project Cambria?

In 2014, Facebook made a huge fortune by acquiring Oculus. After the acquisition, Meta Quest (formerly Oculus Quest 2) became a VR leader in entertainment, work and education.

Meta’s upcoming new device is codenamed “Project Cambria”, and the listing name is suspected to be “Quest Pro”.This mixed reality (MR) device will combine virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) visualization on one device.

The upcoming MR headset will run on Meta’s Presence Platform for integrated VR/AR visualization. In a Facebook video posted in May this year, Zuckerberg operated a Cambria device and showed off the MR operating system.

In that video, Zuckerberg played “World Beyond,” an immersive MR demo that lets users interact with animated creatures and explore an immersive world. Zuckerberg added that the Presence Platform is also suitable for enterprise use.
