Cryptocurrency industry practitioners are always saying that this big bitcoin bull market of 2020-2021 is an institutional bull.
For example, Grayscale Bitcoin Trust’s holdings have continued to increase from over 100,000 in early 2020 to over 600,000 Bitcoins, MicroStrategy has continued to invest nearly $3+ billion in Bitcoins, and Tesla bought $1.5 billion in Bitcoins at one point.
In June 2021, the sovereign nation of El Salvador even legislated Bitcoin as legal tender.
So, which governments and institutions are holding bitcoin? And how much bitcoin do they hold?
The website BitcoinTreasuries has compiled the data and broken it down into four categories: EFT, countries, publicly traded companies, and private companies. The data shows that EFT, countries, publicly traded companies, and private companies currently hold over 1.43 million BTC, accounting for nearly 6.818% of the 21 million total BTC.
