Westend provides a test environment for our infrastructure partners to test their deployments and processes on Polkadot and Kusama.

Westend is a test network for Polkadot, replacing the previous Alexander test network

Compared to Alexander, Westend more accurately simulates the way to interact with Kusama or Polkadot, allowing teams and developers to build and deploy parallel chains or try out Polkadot’s governance, staking, nomination and validation features on a test network. Validators can test their deployments, especially the node setup. Exchanges and wallets can test the transactions they submit. Everything you can do at Polka, you can do at Westend.

Why use Westend instead of Kusama or Polkadot?

Westend is a test network for whatever purpose. You don’t need a KSM or DOT to interact with Westend, so it’s the perfect testbed for verifiers to test verifier setups without worrying about getting slash penalties before deploying to Polkadot or Kusama, and then also to test anything with parallel chains. Basically, anything you want to do on Polka or Kusama, you can do on Westend without the need for KSM or DOT to interact with the network.

To use the Westend test network, you need Westies (WND)

The tokens on this network are called Westies coins, and they have no economic value. Like Alexander, Westies have a tap where you can request up to 150 mWND (million Westies) from each address twice every 24 hours. Follow these instructions to get Westies.

Send !drip to Riot chat room #westend_faucet:matrix.org to get Westies coins.

For specific instructions on obtaining WNDs.

Westend has some of the same parameters as Polkadot, such as the session length and governance enactment period. It is very similar to how you would interact on Kusama or Polka. Currently in Westend, you can deploy full nodes, sentry nodes or authentication nodes, or use other features of Westend such as staking, identity and social recovery.

More information can be found in Westend’s README, and the test network can be viewed on Telemetry.
