Toyota wins Japan’s single-model sales championship for the first time in 5 years

Toyota Yaris’ sales in the first half of the year increased 2.5 times from the same period last year to 119,112 vehicles.

According to the sales data of various models in Japan in the first half of the year (January to June) released by the industry group of Japanese automobile sales companies, Toyota’s “YARIS” leapt to the top spot. It is the first time that Toyota has taken the top spot since the 2016 “Prius”. In 2020, due to the impact of the new crown epidemic, people will go out less, but this year’s sales continue to recover. Among the top 10 models, the sales of 9 models are higher than the previous year.

Toyota Yaris

The Japan Federation of Automobile Sales Associations and the National Federation of Light Automobile Associations released sales data. Toyota Yaris’ sales in the first half of the year increased 2.5 times from the same period last year to 119,112 vehicles.

The second place is Honda’s light vehicle (Japanese domestic model classification, refers to small vehicles that meet the conditions such as displacement of 660cc or less) “N-BOX”, with sales of 11,551 units, an increase of 9%. N-BOX has ranked first for 4 consecutive years since 2017, but lost to Yaris this year. In third place is Suzuki’s light vehicle “Spacia”, with sales increasing by 20.5% to 78,698 units.

Honda N-BOX

As of 2020, light-duty vehicles are the top frequent customers, and this is the first time that registered cars (regular vehicles with a displacement of 660cc or more, different from Japanese light-duty vehicles) have leapt to the top in the first half of the year since the 2016 Prius. Light vehicles account for half of Japan’s top 10 best-selling models, and their popularity remains solid, but small registered vehicles such as Toyota Yaris and ROOMY also performed well. The price of these models is kept at the same level as that of light-duty vehicles, and the safety performance of these models has been improved, which has received positive reviews.

Judging from a single month in June, the Honda N-BOX returned to No. 1 for the first time in 10 months. Sales increased by 12.4% year-on-year to 17,479 vehicles. The second place is Yaris, with a year-on-year increase of 36.2% to 14,937 vehicles.
