The history before the start of IPFS and Filecoin at the watershed moment

In 1999, Napster swept the world by offering unlimited free music, and the record company has not yet switched to a new business model. Users can share media files freely, because Napster’s peer-to-peer network removes the barriers to doing so.

The origin of IPFS and the new P2P summer

Juan Bennett grew up this previous P2P summer. He has personally experienced the power of P2P networks. When he was studying computer science at Stanford University, he was particularly interested in distributed networks.

The IPFS project was born.

Despite the ambitions of IPFS, Juan’s vision did not stop there. He founded the Protocol Lab in May 2014 to support the basic research, development and deployment of open network (such as the Internet) infrastructure, as well as IPFS and its supplementary incentive layer Filecoin as the first project .

Protocol Labs entered the Y Combinator 2014 summer course. Juan started writing code and the IPFS white paper.

The white paper was released in July 2014. It attracted the attention of P2P and Internet enthusiasts, including Jeromy Johnson. “Why” and other early contributors shared Juan’s vision for a distributed, uncensorable, and permissionless file system. They work in the evenings and weekends and are initially free because they believe that open networks like IPFS may have a positive impact on the world.

In the summer of 2015, the small but growing IPFS team (about five or six full-time contributors) settled in a co-working space in Seattle. As interest in the project continued to grow, they improved the Go and JavaScript implementations of IPFS.

Satoshi Nakamoto’s 2009 Bitcoin white paper ushered in the revival of P2P innovation . The summer of P2P is in full swing. IPFS is used in Ethereum and the broader blockchain community. In September 2015, Neocities became the first major site to implement IPFS in production .

Two watershed moment in 2017 confirmed the growing around IPFS of development .


The first one was initiated by a passionate person with ideas. Jakub Sztandera, an IPFS software engineer, personally downloaded the Turkish version of Wikipedia and put the snapshot on IPFS to deal with national censorship. This commitment reflects the value of the project. A dynamic team and community unite to provide new performance upgrades for IPFS.

As the team continues to grow, multiple interdependent projects, and the ecosystem of users and partners, the IPFS team begins to develop, share, and execute product roadmaps until they mature.

This focus has achieved significant results in the IPFS community in 2019. Protocol Labs hosted the first IPFS Camp. This conference brought together 150 distributed network pioneers to learn, collaborate and build together. At the same time, it also inspires successful cooperation.
