Morgan Stanley has co-led a $48 million Series B round of funding for blockchain company Securitize.

This is Morgan Stanley’s first investment in the blockchain space.

Securitize, a blockchain company that provides asset tokenization services, has raised $48 million in a Series B funding round, The Block reported on June 21. The round was co-led by Morgan Stanley and Blockchain Capital. Morgan Stanley Tactical Value Investing, part of Morgan Stanley’s investment management team, invested in Securitize.

As part of the deal, Morgan Stanley Tactical Value Investing co-head Pedro Teixeira joined Securitize’s board of directors.

Teixeira said this is Morgan Stanley’s first venture investment in the blockchain space.

Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, Japan’s largest trust bank, Ava Labs, IDC Ventures, Migration Capital and Japanese IT company NTT Data participated in this round, with renewed participation from investors such as Ripple and Blockchain Ventures.

Securitize is developing Securitize Markets, a marketplace for trading digital asset securities. The marketplace is expected to launch in the next few months, providing liquidity to the private capital markets.

Founded in 2017, U.S.-based Securitize allows companies to raise capital by issuing digital securities through its blockchain-based platform. securitize says more than 150 companies have used its platform to date and have raised capital from more than 300,000 investors. The company’s asset management arm, Securitize Capital, offers two cryptocurrency income funds – the Bitcoin Income Fund and the USDC Income Fund – that provide cryptocurrency and decentralized financial exposure to qualified institutional investors in the form of digital asset securities.
