Stanford University, known as the “Cradle of Silicon Valley”, has followed the trend of technology and launched a course “Virtual Human” that can be carried out through VR virtual reality technology. The course covers hardware, software, content, and people. It can be said that it is “Building a standard paradigm for the Metaverse.”

What is the underlying logic of the Metaverse? As one of the core technologies of Metaverse, VR (virtual reality technology), do you really understand its original meaning? How does learning happen in virtual reality? How will people communicate in virtual reality? What does entertainment mean? How should the training be carried out? …

01 Cisco Experiment: How to make employees get along better with people who are different from themselves?

The first industry funding we received came from Cisco. They hoped to organize some diversification and tolerance training to help employees avoid being treated differently due to different races, genders, and ages. They hope to train employees to stand by others. Think about problems from a different perspective, avoid job discrimination, and get along better with people who are different from yourself. 

In order to achieve this training simulation, we use two theories: 

  • Sociological Theory-Contact Hypothesis

In the 1960s, blacks and whites in the United States went to different schools, and they were separated. So sociologists and psychologists began to study the contact hypothesis-if people stay in the same classroom and they all work towards the same goal, they will eventually learn how to get along and reduce prejudice. 

  • Neurological theory

In virtual reality, you have an external representation, which we call an avatar. If you spend about 4 minutes moving your body, in the virtual reality mirror, you will see that your avatar is also doing the same action. And, we will slowly accept that the incarnation is actually a part of ourselves. 

Later, we combined these two theories and started experimenting, that is, if different people stay together for a period of time, they will get along more harmoniously, and the brain will see the avatar as their own. 

The next question is, in the virtual reality mirror, if I become a woman, or a person of other races, or become 30 years old, it will allow me to better understand other people’s feelings, and then to others. More kind, isn’t it? 

The results of the study show that instead of making people tolerate others in any way, it is better to change their identity to experience the feeling of being discriminated against, which is more able to allow people to change their behavior and treat others more kindly. 

02 The interview simulator is so cool, how to avoid “preferences” in interviews?

The National Football League wants to be No. 1 in cultural training, especially diversity, so we cooperated with them and decided to work hard on the interview. 

Everyone has had an interview experience. Many people are prone to making mistakes. We will look at others and ask interviewers different questions because of differences in dress, gender, age, hairstyle, and even looks. 

We all strive to be the best, but it is difficult because we all have preferences.

So, imitating the flight simulator, we built an interview simulator—— 

In other words, we are not learning from the manual, but learning from doing, learning from making mistakes , and then getting feedback and making corrections. 

We have built a high-end realistic artificial intelligence system. You sit with someone and conduct an interview. We use the tracking system to record all body language, such as where you are looking, how close you are to a person’s space, and so on. 

After the end, we will ask you to repeat the same interview, but this time, you are the person interviewed by yourself. Why do you want to do this? 

Because then you can see your own behavior from the perspective of others. 

Then, the same interview will be repeated, and in the repeated, you will truly experience, for example, when facing candidates of different genders, races, and ages, as an interviewer, which parts of your eyes will look at, and so on. Then through these first-hand nonverbal behavior information, you can naturally correct your “biased” behavior. 

We will encourage you to make mistakes. 

The performance of many Fortune 100 CEOs in the laboratory will shock you. Even if they control hundreds of millions of dollars in their hands, they will still say something inappropriate. And we want them to express it truthfully. Only in this way can the simulator be more accurate. 

In short, this model is very good, we are doing this project with many companies, and the results are quite fruitful. 

0 Regarding delayed gratification , how can young Americans learn to save money?

How to make people postpone doing things that are pleasing? 

People always tend to enjoy in time, but it’s hard to imagine the pain in the future if this continues. For example, when we are 70 years old, what will life be like? 

Therefore, we decided to make the future less abstract through experiments. 

For example, when the subjects came to the laboratory, we scanned their faces, and when they walked into the virtual reality mirror, they would see what they looked like in the future-they slowly changed from 20 to 70 years old. 

In the United States, there is an economic phenomenon that young people in their 20s never save money, which will cause them to fall into poverty by the age of 60, let alone 80 or 90. Therefore, letting young Americans learn to save money is a very important issue. 

The results of the research show that when young people see how they will age in the future in virtual reality, they will really delay doing things that are pleasing, that is, they will be more clearly aware that it is only now that they don’t spend money. Instead, save the money so that you will not fall into poverty in the future. 

The first company to use this product was Merrill Lynch. They used the webcam on the laptop to create a three-dimensional model of the face, and then used the face aging algorithm to show the future of the customer. 

In other words, if you are going to open a U.S. bank account, the staff will ask you, do you want to have a “face-to-face retirement” experience? If you agree, the bank will scan your face and make your future look. After that, every time you do online banking, your future self will stare at you. 

In addition, we also made a simple calculation, that is, the more you save, the happier you will be in the future. 

This is a win-win situation, which is conducive to increasing savings and social stability. 

04 American football experiment to improve the decision-making skills of the “quarterback”

In American football, the role of the quarterback is very important. It is equivalent to the leader of the on-the-spot command and directly affects the offense of a team. He needs to check the surrounding defense in a few seconds, and the defensive team will run around and try. Trying to block his sight made him feel dizzy. 

In other words, the quarterback must make strategic decisions quickly and inform his teammates. 

In 2005, a student named Derek Belch took my virtual reality class at Stanford University. He told me, Jeremy, can we use virtual reality to train track and field athletes? I said, Derek, this is a good idea, but the current technology has not yet reached that level. 

But about 10 years later, he came back, and he did it. 

In 2013, Derek returned to my laboratory as a PhD student and he was also an assistant coach for the Stanford University football team. 

His thesis is about how to train athletes through the development of virtual reality. 

In fact, we are not training them how to kick, throw or run, but to train their decision-making skills. 

Every Monday, we have to record a 360-degree video of the training. Then, we put together videos from different angles to create a simulated scene, and then the quarterback can wear virtual glasses to experience, identify the defense mode, and make the best strategic changes. 

About three weeks later, Stanford coach David Shaw believed that this method was very effective, so he asked all players to use this technique to train. In that season, the Stanford team’s performance exceeded expectations. 

Derek Belch graduated on January 2, 2015, and then the next day, he founded a startup company called STRIVR. I am also the co-founder of STRIVR. What’s more, what is surprising is that Derek signed contracts with six professional teams within three months. From then on, the company began to grow rapidly. 

The German national football team is one of our best customers, and they use this technology in football. In addition, we also used it in baseball and basketball. The U.S. Olympic ski team also used it to train and improve the performance of their players on the track. 

05 Wal-Mart’s “Black Friday” allows employees to do their jobs better

In order to make employees perform better, Wal-Mart has probably created more than 200 training academies. Therefore, we chose one of the colleges as a small pilot for virtual reality. 

We believe that in many cases, immersive training is more effective. 

Among them, the most typical case is Wal-Mart’s holiday shopping, also known as “Black Friday.” This is the busiest day of the year for employees. People are running around and shouting to snap up promotional items. 

But what is the problem? 50% of Wal-Mart managers have never participated in a holiday shopping because of the extremely high turnover during the holiday shopping. 

In other words, in this very stressful day, if something goes wrong, its entire economy will be hit, but no one has really felt this crazy situation. 

Therefore, we use virtual reality to simulate the holiday shopping scene—— 

Can you scan the room quickly and find the sharp knife left on the deli counter? Can you spot a thief who wants to steal something from the store? Can you teach people to talk to customers better? … 

Therefore, there are a large number of situations where virtual reality can be used for simulation. 

Later, we put this virtual reality product in that training academy and observed it for three months, and obtained some qualitative data, and then expanded to 30 academies. 

By comparison, we found that based on the use of virtual reality technology training, customer retention rate and employee learning have improved. Later, more than 150,000 Wal-Mart employees benefited from this technology. 

This is really the first large-scale use of virtual reality in the history of virtual reality, and it is changing the way companies train. 

06 Joint leasing company to make training safer and more efficient 

Virtual reality is also widely used in the training of some dangerous things. For example, a joint leasing company often rents out some large-scale equipment. When organizing sales staff for training, it puts them in a dangerous situation. 

So, how to make sales better? 

For example, in a construction site, a female salesperson or a male salesperson needs to bypass some beams, which may be very dangerous. 

But in fact, companies do not want employees to be injured. For this reason, they spend a lot of money on safety training. 

A little bit, I actually love virtual reality very much, but sometimes working with the company makes me feel frustrated, because I want to tell the world how cool virtual reality is and what practical value it has, I have to wait until they agree After that, there are obvious reasons to speak publicly. 

Therefore, it was only recently that the United Leasing Company publicly announced that after applying the virtual reality service, their sales staff’s learning speed in virtual reality has increased by 40% compared with their previous learning speed, and their work efficiency has been improved. . 

This is a huge victory. 

What is worrying about training is that it often takes a lot of time, but virtual reality can help your business training be more efficient. 

At last

Can virtual reality be used for everything? 

My answer is that you can use virtual reality to do things you can’t do in the real world. This is also the original intention of virtual reality invented, but virtual reality also has some shortcomings that you need to pay attention to. 

For example, virtual reality can cause distraction, so never play such video games while driving a car; some virtual reality games can also cause people to become addicted and unable to extricate themselves. Violent games produce worse results; virtual reality is not The influence of children is greater than that of TV… 

More importantly, if you are too immersed in virtual reality, you will not be able to distinguish what is the real world and what is the virtual world. 

So, in the end, I have a suggestion. I recommend a 20-minute rule, that is, just stay in virtual reality for 20 minutes, then take off your glasses, touch the wall, talk to someone, drink a sip of water to remind you Yourself, you are in a real world.
