Opinion丨Why does Metaverse need to be decentralized?

Although Metaverse first appeared in the science fiction novel “Avalanche” published by Neal Stephenson in 1992, it is more widely known through a movie called “Ready Player One”. In the movie, as long as the characters put on the VR equipment, they will come to a virtual world called “Oasis” to interact or compete with players, characters and superheroes from different dimensions. After watching the movie, most viewers may think that the key to the realization of the multiverse world is the development of visual technology. However, the realization of decentralized technology and economy is the key to making the multiverse exciting.

Visual technology involved in Metaverse

Virtual reality (VR) technology is the first visual technology that most people recognize, and it is also the visual technology that most people think of when they hear Metaverse. Because most people think that Metaverse is a fully immersive digital environment, a virtual fantasy world that requires VR glasses to walk into. It should be pointed out that Metaverse is not just virtual reality, VR is just a technology that provides access to the multiverse.

Before the implementation of VR technology, computer equipment was actually the first entrance to the multiverse. With the accelerating popularity of mobile phones, a new way of interacting with the Metaverse has been spawned-a sophisticated camera and sustainable access to the Internet have created a tool that allows the Metaverse to be superimposed on the physical world, namely augmented reality (AR). AR superimposes digital information on the physical environment, and observes the physical environment and superimposed information (such as virtual images) through camera and screen access. We can think of AR as a museum, where everyone can watch and experience digital enhancements in a physical space, but not physically touch them. For example, IKEA programs its furniture and generates virtual images, and authorizes users of the application to “project” virtual furniture in their physical homes to refer to the effects of furniture layouts in their homes.

But when we want to interact with everything in the Metaverse world, AR seems to only satisfy our vision, but the sense of interaction is not strong. Therefore, another mixed reality (MR) technology is produced that goes beyond AR and binds virtual objects to the real environment. The movie “Minority Report” provides an excellent example of interacting with the digital environment in the physical world.

The significance of decentralization for the multiverse

The maturity of the above-mentioned visual technology is only the beginning of the arrival of the multiverse. Whether it’s VR, AR, or XR technology, it only brings initial content to the multiverse and slowly builds momentum, but after reaching a critical scale, this metaverse world will begin to become more dispersed, and more creative users will have The need to create content or the continuation of the world also needs different independent entities to create content.

In order to mobilize users to create content, we need to build a decentralized world computer , so that users only need to focus on content creation, no longer need to spend time and energy to develop the underlying technology or spend money to obtain creative rights. In addition, we also need a decentralized economy combined with encrypted tokens to make Metaverse efficient, fair and sustainable. Decentralization is essential to Metaverse. If an organization gains most of the control over Metaverse, it is likely to become another centralized operating system (such as the current Internet giant), charging huge amounts for any transaction. Expenses, thereby stifling efficiency and innovation. Therefore, a meta-universe that can thrive must be open and decentralized, rather than another entity that controls assets, so that the real “oasis” will come.

The power to create a decentralized Metaverse

Any power, control, and economic monopoly that kept the Internet away from authoritative centers in the past, and now when we talk about some technologies and behaviors involved in blockchain projects, are all forward forces that promote the Metaverse, which naturally needs decentralization. These technologies and methods include but are limited to:

Open source: An important force that promotes the non-licensed multiverse, allowing the code in the project to be provided for free, so that the creator can focus on the uniqueness of the work instead of specializing in the underlying code.

Non-licensed operating system: If the creator needs to ask the owner of the operating system for permission to publish a product on it, it is equivalent to paying an innovation tax. The development of Metaverse requires more non-licensed operating system platforms. At present, everyone can choose Linux, Windows and Mac Oc. In the future, the expansion problem can be solved and the public chain platform will become the main force of Metaverse’s underlying operating system.

Distributed computing: Cloud computing is just the beginning. As time goes by, more computing will be pushed to the edge-remote-or even into the individual’s home. Computing power will become more like utility programs on the grid, and less like a data center. Some idle will be transferred to the computer network, creators only need to pay attention to the content, and do not need to worry about how to build or access back-end functions, and the failure of a single node.

Peer-to-peer: Fewer servers means fewer permissions and lower project complexity. Many projects including games and multiverse experiences can be built with a design that does not require the use of a server. For example, deterministic simulation and consensus-based victory systems can allow games such as real-time strategy (RTS), multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) and tower defense to coordinate without a server.

Microservices: A structure that reduces risk and complexity by shifting from a large single backend to a smaller service unit that is automatically expanded in the cloud. A higher degree of decentralization is achieved by making applications easier to migrate between cloud service providers or distributed across multiple data centers.

Smart contract: Allows to automatically resolve certain transactions on the blockchain. Examples include the creation of non-fungible tokens (NFT), decentralized asset swaps, and decentralized financial applications and centralized autonomous organizations (DAO). Now in the meta-universe world, there has been a trend that ownership and destiny are in the hands of players.
