“I believe DAOs are at the forefront of the coordination problem space. Their permissionless, task-driven, and community-operated architecture represents functional improvements for future work.” Gitcoin founder Kevin Owocki said.
As the DAO organization plays an increasingly important role in the encryption ecosystem, GitcoinDAO and BanklessDAO have recently conducted more than 400 questionnaire surveys on the development status of the DAO ecosystem and published research reports, including the characteristics and preferences of the members of the DAO organization. The introduction, and also an excerpt from many DAO organization members talking about DAO, the main information of the report and Gitcoin founder Kevin Owocki’s article sorted and compiled as follows:
DAO is the basic building block
Humans compete for resources, but we also coordinate for survival.
We coordinate everything from schedule, finance, groceries, international trade, etc. We are interdependent beings. We do not live in a vacuum, but rely on families, companies, institutions and markets to survive.
So why are there so many coordination failures in the world? How do we solve them? How should we speed up coordination? How can we better coordinate ourselves and inspire better coordination mechanisms in the world?
I believe that the DAO is at the forefront of the coordination problem space. Their permissionless, task-driven, and community-operated architecture represents a stepped function improvement for future work.
I really believe that the impact of Ethereum on the world will be better coordination.
For the first time in history, we have a transparent, immutable, and programmable foundation on which we can build new institutions. Even if the founder is a corrupt institution, it will not be corrupt.
In other words, we can now invent new mechanisms on an unprecedented solid and clean foundation, and use this to fundamentally change the way in which resource allocation is coordinated.
Improved coordination means better resource allocation, less corruption, and more symmetry between the value created and the value acquired. This is not good for middlemen and good for others.
Once we solve the coordination problem of Ethereum, we can export what we have learned to create a better coordination mechanism in the mainstream world.
So how do we solve the coordination problem in the ETH ecosystem? We just turned it into DAO. DAO is the basic building block of this problem space.
What is the status of DAO coordination? The following information can help us understand the new field of DAO as the ultimate coordination tool.
Characteristics and preferences of DAO members
In this statistical data, 422 respondents covered a total of 223 different DAO organizations. Among them, Bankless, Gitcoin, Index Coop, DAOSquare and other organizations have the most member data, all with more than 10 people.
In terms of the time to enter the encryption industry, most of the interviewees entered in 17-19.
In terms of countries where DAO members are located, most of them are located in China, followed by the United States and India. By city, the top cities in the number of DAO organizations are Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, London, New York, Los Angeles, Singapore and other places, of which Hong Kong accounts for 7.8%.
In terms of income of DAO members, most people do not rely on DAO as the main source of income (189 people) or the only source of income (104 people). At the same time, most interviewees stated that their monthly income is between US$5,000-10,000.
In terms of the types of DAO organizations, the number of DAO organizations in NFT, social, investment, agreements, services, grants, etc. is relatively high, among which the numbers of the first three are 112, 100 and 80 respectively.
In terms of the number of members of the DAO organization, the number of DAO organizations with 0-50 people is the largest, at 97, but there are 21 and 19 DAO organizations with 1,000-5,000 and 5,000+ members respectively.
In addition, the survey report also covers the underlying blockchain projects, favorite DApp projects, and the most commonly used Web3 tools mainly used by these DAO members. The top underlying blockchain projects are Ethereum, BSC, Solana, and Bitcoin. Unlike Polkadot, the top Dapp projects are Uniswap , Opensea, Sushiswap, Zapper and Gnosis safe, and the top Web3 tools are Poap, Snapshot, Gitcoin, Rabbithole and Gnosis.
How do DAO practitioners view the current status and future of DAO?
DAO is changing the way we organize talent and capital. By using decentralized networks as their tracks and symbols to motivate participants, closed companies can now become open protocols. Their user base can immediately go global and have a more flexible, more flat workforce from a larger talent pool.
DAO can better cooperate with entities in the same field and grow together. Even the possible types of organizations are changing, because online communities can now more easily monetize their networks, and we may see some of the biggest companies in the future from Discord channels, artist’s fan base or content creator’s subscribers stand out.
For me, the big question about DAOs is how they will surpass the superpowers to date: relying on economic incentives as the main design strategy. We humans are not just economic people. If we are to delegate important things to the DAO, we need to make sure that they are accountable to all of us.
People are already thinking of ways to do this in exciting ways. Gircoin’s public product-centric approach is part of this. 1Hive’s approach to value-based “contracts” is part of this. Projects like Kleros and ETHDenver are also based on a cooperative structure, building democracy into the core of the community. Economics needs to be accountable to democracy.
I look forward to the day when the DAO serves the people, so that we do not repeat the personification of bureaucratic entities and make them a deeply ingrained power structure. DAO is a carrier of collective action, not bureaucracy and slavery.
Imagine the ultimate marriage of technology, community, capital, ownership, and purpose. That is DAO.
From managing and formulating agreements to pooling investment capital, we are changing the structure and financing of the Internet. But putting the future of Web3 in the hands of the community is dangerous.
We need to help the DAO community to better communicate, coordinate and respect the value and contribution each of us brings. Decentralized identities can issue verified credentials and display reputation, which will help increase the provenance and weight of DAO proposals, Discord’s threading and voting rights delegation practices.

It is an honor to be part of the ecosystem that will shape the future of organizations and institutions through DAO in the early days of encryption technology. With this privilege, we also have the responsibility to design sustainability, diversity, fairness and inclusiveness from a long-term perspective.
Otherwise, the DAO may only create value for an exclusive group and fall into the risks and negative consequences brought about by the concentration of wealth and power. If we are to change the world through how humans organize, coordinate, and create value, we need more diversity of people, backgrounds, skills, and expertise to design the organization of the future in a truly multidisciplinary approach—not just The person who found the password now.
I want to make sure that those who find a knife in 10, 20, or 50 years can benefit as much as those who find it now. I want to make sure that those who don’t have thousands of dollars to buy tokens can become part of the props and have a say. I want to make sure that what we call the cultural revolution is produced from many different cultures and different perspectives.
Despite their hype, DAO is just another exciting new acronym. To realize their potential, we need a deeper understanding of the cognitive basis of human communication and coordination, as well as the broad implications of motivational design. A more complex pseudo-anonymous identity culture, coupled with the support of a reputation model based on your actual “contribution”, can help reduce discrimination and empower those who “act”.
Finally, the cultivation of digital animism can provide us with a compassionate framework to promote the equality of non-human digital entities and systems in an inevitably human-centered environment.
As encryption technology affects the lives of billions of people, expanding coordination and legitimacy will be crucial.
The DAO will pave the way for new forms of identity and democracy that will make our traditional institutions obsolete and meet our global challenges.
DAO is not a new type of company, nor is it a new way of governance. It includes these aspects, but it is far more than the sum of these aspects. This is a brand-new economic activity and system. We have not yet a complete language to describe it, let alone a language to describe where it will go.
I believe that DAOS will prove to be the next great innovation in terms of how humans collectively coordinate to achieve and stimulate the operation of a common goal. Perhaps it will even prove to be not only the greatest innovation in centuries, but also the greatest innovation that mankind has learned to cooperate with each other for thousands of years.
In my opinion, DAOs are in an amorphous state of evolution, and we still don’t know what impact they will have on society. We have great hopes and ambitions for what they “may” become. It is a tool that empowers individuals and provides super-powered communities, and overcomes the capture and extraction patterns of past technologies.
But at this point, the best thing anyone can do is to put both hands in to help these entities find a foothold. By using our integrity and intuition to guide the development of this magical technology, we finally liberated our soul and promoted a wave of innovation that will echo long after we have passed away.
