NYSE files trademark application for NFT trading

On Feb. 10, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to register the “NYSE” brand for several blockchain and crypto-related products and services.Designated commodities include virtual and augmented reality software, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and online marketplaces.

According to the filing, the financial exchange will be able to offer “downloadable virtual goods” for NFTs and digital collectibles, as well as “verification of NFT data using blockchain technology.” This isn’t the first foray into NFTs or the Metaverse by the NYSE. In April 2021, the NYSE minted 6 NFTs in honor of the first trades of Spotify, Snowflake, Unity, DoorDash, and Roblox.

On the company’s official website, the NYSE said, “As we continue to welcome new and innovative companies to our community, we will welcome more NYSE NFTs.” The application indicated that the NYSE plans to Launching an NFT marketplace for buyers, sellers, and traders of “digital assets, artwork, collectibles, and non-fungible tokens.”

There is also a section detailing “cryptocurrency exchange services” that will facilitate “virtual currency financial transactions.” In addition, downloadable and non-downloadable virtual and augmented reality, as well as application programming interfaces (APIs), are also included in the application.

Ahead of the NYSE, several more public companies filed trademark applications not only to protect their brands, but to signal their exploration of blockchain and NFTs. Recently, McDonald’s filed a trademark application to open restaurants in the Metaverse.

Disney’s patent for interactive attractions for theme park visitors has also been approved.
