Network effects do not apply to the meta-universe: fragmentation is closer to the essence of the Metaverse

What is the meaning of the term “meta universe”? Where did it evolve? And what are the future possibilities?

For different people, the term “meta universe” has different meanings.

For some people, meta-universe refers to an immersive virtual reality experience in a persistent world. But for others, the meta universe is a specific technology stack.

In fact, some people believe that the meta universe is a vision for the future society.

About 14 years ago, I asked Charlie Stross, my favorite science fiction writer, to help me write an article about the future of games.

Regarding the meta universe, he said this:

The really interesting question is: Will the meta-universe encompass everything and then focus on a whole (for example, games or business meetings can be played in different places)? Or will there be rupture, and thus more different environments?

It can now be said that neither of the above two situations has been fully realized.

In Neil Stephenson’s novel “Avalanche”, Metaverse is operated by the Global Multimedia Protocol Group, and in the real world we live in, this entity is controlled by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

In “Ready Player One”, OASIS virtual reality is owned by a company called “Innovative Online Enterprise”-the storyline largely revolves around its control.

Although social networks all seem to follow the winner-takes-all economic model, virtual spaces have too much diversity and experience to follow the same model.

When Stross wrote about the fragmentation of the virtual world, he was closer to the fact that the experience of games, virtual reality, and online communities is too diverse to adapt to a specific field, resulting in fragmentation.

These experiences such as the immersive 3D VR environment envisioned by Ready Player One, such as the mobile games “Candy Legend”, “Star Trek” and “The Original God”, such as Netflix on the living room wall, such as the virtual theater projected into Oculus. Surfaces, such as the 3D third person in “Fortnite”, “Decentraland”, “Sim City” and “Roblox”…

All in all, the meta universe includes asynchronous and synchronous, real-time and turn-based, client-server, downloading or streaming.

Meta universe is a set of online and interconnected experiences. The common theme is the connection between players and the online framework, allowing online content changes, online social connections, or online profitability.

The key word is “online”, and the meta universe is an online multi-world.

“Diversity” means that the creation of games and virtual worlds is a combination of multiple disciplines: game design, game theory, behavioral economics, analytics, databases, music, AI, GPUs, graphics, branding, performance, user experience design, narrative , Software engineering and hundreds of other talent knowledge.

One way to approach the meta universe is to invite people into the walled garden that provides extensive technical support for creativity. In fact, objective results have now been produced. In exchange, you have to pay a high rent and be limited by the owner’s creativity.

Roblox is part of the meta universe

The other method is the “meta universe for all”, so decentralization is needed.

We have seen this in the DeFi field. In order to release the creativity of the world, we need to apply similar modes to the virtual world and game space.

The emergence of technologies, interfaces, and business services allows anyone to mix and match, mix, build, and be compensated for their creativity.

This kind of meta-universe requires the ability to create and exchange assets between games, worlds, and environments. It also requires the separation of rules, content, and technical foundations.

While programming and technical barriers increase process, workflow, and engineering work, creative works need to be freed from these barriers.

In the future, the AI that drives the chessboard can provide power for mobile games, or it can be executed on the chessboard in virtual reality; the art of representing assets can come from a market where creators can be appropriately compensated; and participation in online chess competitions can be made by the line. Driven by the event engine, its ticket sales provide funds for the organizers.

The “walled garden” will include a vast theme park-but it won’t be the only destination.

These theme parks will contain games, experiences and works of art produced by individual innovators and small creative teams. They can choose to contact a large number of users in these fields, or create independently to maintain their independence.

Welcome to the meta universe: a world more incredible, more extraordinary and even more magical than we initially imagined.
