Whether Web 3.0 is “coming soon” or “already here” depends on who you are talking to!

In my opinion, MIT is undoubtedly one of these innovation centers. When I was at MIT, I observed the perfect integration of participants. In this rapidly emerging field of new technological opportunities, these participants are gradually turning universities into core participants and thought leaders. From cutting-edge research on decentralization and campus blockchain-related courses to revolutionary initiatives in AR/VR, gaming communities, and amazing new startups, MIT is full of innovation across the entire Web 3.0 space stack .

Web3.0 is not only related to culture and art, but also related to technology. Boston and Cambridge form a closely connected university cluster composed of the world’s leading arts and science institutions, including Harvard University, Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern University, Emerson College, and Berkeley School of Music (many of which are not far apart) , The next generation’s ability to shape the foundation of a new network building from these two cities can be greatly accelerated.

Decentralized Information Group (DIG). DIG, located in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is an important research group that has historically been led by Sir Tim Berners-Lee (the inventor of the World Wide Web) and Lalana Kagal. For decades, it has paved the way for research on decentralized technologies and technologies that can make the Internet more open and help influence social change.

One of the most important projects that DCI has participated in is Bitcoin Core development. The project currently has a team that is actively contributing and maintaining Bitcoin Core. In fact, its two members rank in the top ten among all core contributors in the world according to the number of submissions.

DCI also owns and supports the influential crypto-economic system blockchain journals and conference series. The journal is open access and is also published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press.

AR/VR Research Group, MIT Media Lab. The MIT Media Lab has conducted some of the most pioneering research in the areas of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). Currently supports multiple related research groups, including camera culture, urban science, fluid interface, virus transmission, future sketches, ,, future opera, etc., all participating in AR/VR projects.

Advanced virtual center. The MIT Advanced Virtual Center has created innovative experiences using virtual technology, from VR to film reality (CR), etc., helping people create imaginative experiences in our physical world. The production function of the center is both a studio and a laboratory, while supporting creative projects and new research work.

(I) MIT student courses:

Shared public ledger: cryptocurrency, blockchain and other miracles (6.892). This course focuses on the principles and core technologies of shared public ledgers, with emphasis on Bitcoin and distributed consensus. Topics include Bitcoin, Byzantine agreement, authenticated data structures, Lightning networks, proof of equity, and new technologies for implementing shared public ledgers. More information about the course and course materials can be found on the course’s GitHub page.

Blockchain and currency (15.235 / 15.S12). This is one of the most popular blockchain courses at MIT, and until recently, before he was appointed as the chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the course was taught by Gary Gensler. This course is designed for students who want to explore the potential uses of blockchain technology to change the currency and financial world. It is an important introduction to the DLT space. The course video is now one of the most viewed videos in the entire blockchain space.

(Iii) Administrative courses

Digital Transformation: From Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things to Cloud, Blockchain and Cybersecurity: Led by MIT faculty at the forefront of data science, participants learn about the history and applications of the five most transformative technologies: Block Chain, artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT) and cyber security. As part of the course, students will learn how to use MetaMask to trade with Ether and deploy simple contracts to the Etherium blockchain. This course is for professionals.

3. Clubs and activities

MIT Bitcoin Club. Founded with the help of Dan Elitzer, it is one of the first blockchain clubs in the world. It is operated by undergraduates from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with the clear goal of raising awareness of cryptocurrency, improving its use cases and helping its members understand the existence of blockchain technology and the latest innovations. Over the years, the club has developed into an active MIT student community, supported by loyal alumni and outstanding local talent, all of which have helped to consolidate its strong legacy. Although run by students, it is open to all enthusiasts-true to its history and purpose.

MIT Sloan Blockchain Club. The MIT Blockchain Club is a postgraduate organization of Sloan College, hoping to cultivate knowledgeable and well-rounded future leaders in the blockchain world. The club brings together a group of talented people from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Greater Boston area to create and accelerate innovation in the field, promote closer connections within the community, and provide a bridge for people to explore careers in the industry.

Metaverse Interest Group. MIG is an unofficial group composed of more than 100 participants from the broader MIT community. The group will meet regularly at the end of 2021 to discuss the growing online multiverse, games, blockchain, and decentralized applications The latest trend at the intersection with Web 3.0. It includes students, lecturers, affiliates, startup founders and investors

At the same time, we are seeing the rise of young new-age investors who are helping to create a new era of Web 3.0 innovation. These include MIT alumni Matt Huang (co-founder of industry-leading Paradigm, which has just raised up to $2.5 billion in new funds) and Dan Elitzer (formerly the founding chairman of the MIT Bitcoin Club, now He is the co-founder of Nascent, a global multi-strategy investment company focusing on encryption and open finance).

Celo . Celo is a mobile-first platform that enables anyone with a mobile phone to access financial dApps and encrypted payments. It was originally co-founded by former MIT MBA Rene Reinsberg, former MIT professor and MIT Media Lab Social Computing Group Director Sep Kamvar, and former MIT PhD student Marek Olszewski. cLabs was started by Celo in 2018 and is now one of the many contributors to the open source project. Earlier this year, Valora, a mobile-first digital wallet spin-off from Celo Networks and cLabs, raised US$20 million in Series A financing, led by Celo’s main backer, A16Z .

Dark forest. Dark forest is a space conquest game built on Ethereum . Players can discover and conquer planets in this infinite, procedurally generated, encrypted universe. Dark Forest uses Zero Knowledge Proof (ZKP) to verify game actions on Ethereum without sharing information about actions with other players. The project was co-founded by Brian Gu, a student in the Department of Mathematics at MIT. Brian cooperates with the Ethereum Foundation for application zero-knowledge research and development.

Fyat Lux. Fyat Lux is an interdisciplinary project that combines AR functions, blockchain technology and groundbreaking art. It hopes to further develop NFT to build the world and storytelling so that Metaverse will be easier to understand. Fyat Lux is composed of AR/VR expert Umar Arshad, former MIT MBA and current EIR MIT Fuse Accelerator, MIT Sloan Lecturer, MIT Media Lab alumni Christian Vazquez and Anthony Jones and Jan -Co-founded by Erik Steel.

Messari. Messari is a popular online database for the crypto industry, which provides data insights, pricing and research on crypto assets through an open source repository. The company was founded in 2018 by MIT Sloan University dropout Ryan Selkis, and recently raised $21 million in Series A funding.

Opdefi. opdefi is a DeFi start-up company that focuses on building a blockchain-based quantitative decentralized asset management system. The initial implementation will focus on combining quantitative and decentralized finance to provide a complex mining portfolio on a clear and easy-to-use platform. The opdefi team includes some MIT students. Their goal is to open the platform to beta testers in January 2022, and plan to release a general version of v1 soon.
