At the same time, 5G is also rapidly integrating with other technologies, such as blockchain, Internet of Things, and cloud computing. This year, “Metaverse” is undoubtedly the hottest concept. In this field, is there any use for 5G or telecom operators?
In his speech, Dr. Xiao Feng took “Metaverse and Telecom Operators” as the theme, analyzed the underlying logic, layered architecture, and core technology of Metaverse. At the same time, he did a good job of the role that telecom operators can play in Metaverse. further analysis.
Different people have different understandings of the Metaverse. For Dr. Xiao Feng, who has been studying blockchain for seven or eight years, what exactly is the Metaverse? Is it an inevitable trend in the future? Let’s look at the content of the speech organized below.

Recently, Metaverse is a frequently searched vocabulary, and everyone’s views on Metaverse are also very different. Some people say that the Metaverse is a huge and new commercial outlet; others say that the Metaverse is the largest involution of human society. My opinion is: if human beings stick to the space of the earth, it will be the biggest involution. I believe that whether we intend to expand the physical space of the earth, such as looking for opportunities to migrate to Mars, or building a virtual space similar to the Metaverse, it is a way for human society to break the closed system, introduce new energy, and reduce the increase in entropy. Explore.
I think the Metaverse is a new world that will surely come whether you like it or not. I summarized the following reasons:
First, from “online” to “online” to “presence”
From PC computers and mobile phones to VR/AR helmets, glasses, etc., the connection between human society and the virtual world has gone through three stages.
First of all, in the PC stage, the main behavioral mode that we have in relation to the virtual world and the Internet is “Internet access.” We need to turn on the computer, type a web page in the browser, and then search for this network. After browsing, we turned off the computer and left. If we want to find this website next time, we have to type this URL in the browser to continue to access this website. This is a hardware device based on PC and laptop
Later, in the era of mobile Internet, there were smart phones. Smart phones provide us with the connection to the Internet in the form of APP. Our behavior mode has changed from “online” to “online”. The commercial value of the “online” model is 10 times greater than when online.
In the future, in the Metaverse era, new hardware devices such as VR and AR will provide us with an experience of “presence”. This is a new model of the relationship between humans and the virtual world. I believe that the commercial value of “presence” will be 10 times greater than that of “online”. Poetic illusions such as “a confidant in the sea, and a close neighbor on the horizon”, as ancient humans said, may be realized in the era of the Metaverse.
Second, from 3D reality to 2D screen to 3D virtual reality
The real space of human life is a three-dimensional real world, the Internet has brought us a flat, two-dimensional virtual world, and the Metaverse will bring us a three-dimensional, three-dimensional virtual world.
The huge difference between the three-dimensional, three-dimensional virtual world and the three-dimensional real world is that in the virtual world, time and space can be reorganized. In the real world, space is fixed and time cannot be traced back. But in three-dimensional virtual reality, time can be shuttled and space can be reorganized. For example, you can traverse the three venues of Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen with a digital avatar, and express different opinions in the three venues. These are all It’s your digital clone, it’s your point of view.
Third, the business scenario expands from physical space to virtual space
Human beings are always looking for new business scenarios and new consumer demands. Metaverse will help us expand our business scenarios from physical space to virtual space. This virtual space will continue to expand our consumer demand by 10 or even dozens of times, and a new phenomenon of diminishing costs of scale and increasing returns of scale will appear.
Fourth, from virtual characters to digital characters
Technology has helped us bring us digital and virtual humans such as virtual characters and digital avatars. There are now more than 7 billion people in the world, and these virtual idols and digital avatars may be 10 times the real world population, or 70 billion. If we are engaged in business in a world of 70 billion, its scale must be much larger than the scale of business with 7 billion people.
Based on these four reasons, I believe that the Metaverse will inevitably come, and it will not be shifted by personal will.
So, what exactly is the Metaverse? To sum it up in one sentence, the Metaverse is a three-dimensional virtual world of human society. If subdivided further, the Metaverse includes the concept of virtual society, the concept of digital world, the concept of the world of human consciousness, and the Metaverse is a programmable world.
I think the Metaverse has six layers:
The first layer is the physical layer, including hardware such as VR, AR, XR, and MR.
The second layer is the data layer. Above the hardware devices and the Internet, the Internet of Everything can be digitally symbiotic.
The third layer is the algorithm layer. If you really want everyone to enter the metaverse and be like a fish in the metaverse, you cannot require every metaverse user to be able to program, so low code, especially codeless AIGC and privacy calculations Other technologies will be the foundation of the Metaverse.
The fourth layer is the governance layer. The Metaverse is a virtual space, and the governance modes of virtual space and real space will not be completely the same. In a virtual space where time can be reorganized and space is infinite, the governance layer must be a distributed, self-organizing and decentralized governance method.
The fifth layer is the incentive layer. Metaverse is a new type of economy, and the economy must have its own economic model and incentive mechanism. The incentive layer needs to use digital assets, digital currencies and digital certificates to build a new financial system and a new economic incentive mechanism.
The sixth layer is the application layer. The main participants in the application layer are various content creators who provide content from the perspective of digital survival or digital production.
I summarize the Metaverse into these six levels, so that everyone can understand what a Metaverse is. I have been engaged in blockchain research for seven or eight years. From the perspective of practitioners, the organizational model of Metaverse is likely to be very similar to the organizational model of blockchains such as Ethereum. Metaverse is a trustless network. In the digital world, it is difficult for us to move the trust system that relies on third-party organizations in the real society to the Metaverse. Secondly, Metaverse must also be a decentralized network, a network that can be added or exited without permission. At the same time, it is also a self-organizing network, a large-scale collaborative network.
After giving an overview of Metaverse, I want to talk about what kind of chemical reaction will occur between Metaverse and telecom operators.
From a technical point of view, Metaverse has very high requirements for bandwidth, storage, computing, etc., which may be 10 levels higher than the requirements of the Internet era. For example, in a 3D environment, the storage of all 3D audio, video, and images requires a huge amount of storage space. At the same time, any process or process in the 3D environment involves huge calculations, which are 10 times larger than the requirements of the Internet era. Therefore, I think telecom operators can play the role of Metaverse infrastructure service providers in terms of bandwidth, storage, and computing.
Here, I would like to mention in particular that the energy consumption of the digital economy may be 10 times larger than that of the industrial economy. When everyone enters the Metaverse, the energy consumption of bandwidth, storage, and calculation required to support everyone’s activities in the Metaverse is greater than the energy consumption of 8-9 factories. Therefore, we must reduce the unit energy consumption as much as possible and greatly increase the proportion of green energy, rather than expecting to reduce or limit the total energy consumption of the whole society.
Second, the role
There are four roles in the Metaverse: one is a tool builder, such as a virtual reality technology platform such as NVIDIA Omniverse or Microsoft, etc.; the second role is a platform builder, such as Facebook or Tencent; the third role is an application builder , Such as game company Roblox or companies that provide many applications such as Disney; the fourth category is content creators. I think telecom operators can not only get a share of the tool builders, but also the platform builders. KT is building such a Metaverse platform to facilitate meetings, social interactions, games, and entertainment on it. After all, the basis of Metaverse is sufficient bandwidth, sufficient storage, and sufficient computing.
Third, the model
From the perspective of business models, telecom operators can also play some roles. Based on the distributed, decentralized, and self-organized Metaverse organizational form, telecom operators can build a platform in it to provide infrastructure services for an open and ecological business economy. This infrastructure service is not just communication services, including storage, computing, and even certain development environments on top of storage computing, such as AIGC algorithms that provide code-free development. This is all telecommunications operators can do, but they cannot build a closed system. An open, distributed, and self-organizing ecological platform must be established.
