Meta’s first Metaverse store in the world opens, come with us to explore the store

If you want to conquer the Metaverse, you must first let some people enter the Metaverse

On May 9th, local time, the much-anticipated Meta Store, the world’s first flagship store of Metaverse hardware, finally opened for business!

Meta (formerly Facebook) located its first store directly downstairs from its own office – not Menlo Park headquarters to be precise, but the new Burlingame office of its virtual/augmented reality team Meta Reality Labs:

The Silicon Stars came to the door of the Meta Store early in the morning. There is still time before the opening time of 11:00 am, but the queue at the door has already lined up around the corner:

The group moves slowly, so the Silicon Stars take a casual walk around first. I have to say that the location of the Meta Reality Labs office is really strong: the surrounding scenery is very beautiful, and within a minute of walking out of the building, you can look around the entire San Francisco Bay Area:

Although the mask orders in most parts of the United States have actually been lifted, the requirements of Meta Store for store employees are still very high. While the Silicon Stars were waiting in line, a clerk (the blue T-shirt on the left in the picture below) would often come over to ask each customer if they had an appointment, whether they needed bottled water, etc., and they wore masks throughout the process.

It’s quite funny: when everyone was queuing, the friend below in the little blue man’s clothes walked up and down the crowded aisle, and from time to time, he went to the Reuters reporter next to him to “steal the spotlight”. Turn a blind eye to the surrounding police and Meta security…

An uncle in front of me shouted to the little blue man: Hey Mark, is that you? (Zuckerberg, is that you?)

In fact, the Silicon Stars had already met him when they were looking for a parking space. At first I thought he was a Meta employee, because he asked me if I had an appointment, and “respectfully” led the Silicon Stars to the door of the store. I couldn’t help but wonder what the hell the company was doing…

It is worth mentioning that this buddy does sound a bit like Zuckerberg.

Later, the Silicon Star chatted with the security guard and confirmed that this person is not a Meta employee! The security said he was supposed to be a demonstrator and had been roaming under the Meta office building at lunchtime since last week.

The bravery of the little blue man drew applause from the onlookers, including me. He compared the “Vulcan Raise of Hands” (from Star Trek) and shouted, “Hope you all have fun at the Meta Store! I’m sure you’ll have a blast in the Metaverse!”

In the laughter and laughter that interacted with the little blue man, the silicon star finally came to the front of the queue.A clerk told Silicon Stars that due to the company’s epidemic prevention policy, there can only be a maximum of 20 people in the store with an area of less than 150 square meters.

Entering the store, the first thing that catches your eye is the two core products of the current Meta hardware department: the VR headset Quest 2, and the video telephony device Portal.

Metaverse headset Quest 2

As an important layout for the company to enter the retail field of the Metaverse, the Meta Store offline store must place the Metaverse headset in the most important position.

The Quest 2 is currently Meta’s flagship hardware product for consumers, priced as high as $299! This price includes the standard headband, two matching grips, and two AA batteries.

The Meta Store also offers a live demo experience in-store. In-store customers can wear Quest 2 and experience various well-known VR games and applications including Beat Saber (rhythm lightsaber), fishing, Supernatural (fitness, etc.) in a huge open field.

It’s a pity that this demo needs to be pre-registered. When the Silicon Stars registered, it was already the next day… so I can only watch others have fun.

But it doesn’t matter: Juny, a reporter from Silicon Stars, recently purchased a Quest 2 headset and started evaluating Horizon World, a full-scale Metaverse experience product promoted by Meta.

According to her evaluation report, although the gameplay in Horizon World is too simple and the social experience is a bit “embarrassing”, as the first consumer-grade Metaverse product on the market, its experience is still very novel and impressive.

In addition to the Quest 2 body, the Meta Store also showcased peripheral products developed by itself and third-party partners, such as premium headbands, Logitech headsets, and Anker’s charging/display Base etc.:

Meta Portal

According to a Meta Store clerk, since the 2020 epidemic, the company has distributed Portal devices to almost all eligible employees, making it more convenient for them to work from home/remote. With the gradual normalization of working from home, more and more people are using Portal, and product sales have steadily increased.

Today, Portal has grown into a family of four different products:

The standard Portal 10″, as well as the Portal Go with built-in battery, which can be hand-held and used around the house (below)

There is also a 14-inch large-screen Portal Plus:

And Portal TV that can be plugged into any TV HDMI port to turn the TV into a smart communication terminal:

The grand opening of the first offline store this time, Portal has naturally become one of the main core products displayed. At the store site, as long as the other party has compatible apps such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, customers can directly get started and make video calls to their family members using the Portals device in the store.

To celebrate the opening of the physical store, the official also launched a Portal promotion plan: from May 8 to 21, buy two Portal devices online or in-store and you can directly save $100.

One More Thing: Smart Glasses!

Stories, the smart glasses jointly developed by Meta and Ray-ban, together with the headset and Portal constitute the “troika” of the Meta Store.

The concept of smart glasses is not new, Google Glass and Snapchat Spectacles are all high-profile similar products before.

For Meta and Ray-Ban, the design philosophy of Stories is not to emphasize the cool label of smart glasses, but to make it more low-key, more down-to-earth, and help users more easily capture and share the beautiful details of life.

There’s a small button on the right leg of the glasses, and you can tap it to start shooting a video directly, or press it for a little longer (about half a second) to take a photo.

It’s worth mentioning that I found that Ray-Ban Stories has two cameras unlike any other brand of smart glasses we’ve seen before.

The Silicon Star asked the clerk if the two cameras had any exclusive functions, and the answer was no. However, the clerk said that the glasses will “fuse” the materials of the two lenses when shooting/photographing, so that the final picture will be closer to the binocular vision of the human eye.

To tell the truth, I don’t feel any difference between the picture and the ordinary monocular camera… But anyway, the dual camera still has some advantages in terms of technical prospects. For example, there may be supporting applications in the future, which can be Detailed and accurate depth information can be read out of the camera image, making more functions possible.

(At least today, Stories’ dual cameras don’t have such a feature.)

In terms of style, Stories also uses three classic styles of Ray-Ban: Wayfarer, Meteor and Round. In terms of lenses and coatings, Ray-Ban officially offers a sunglasses version ($299), as well as a photochromic lens version ($379).

In addition, the clerk also told me that professional optometry institutions in the United States, including Kaiser Permanente, have also supported Stories, and consumers can rest assured that the frames will not be damaged.

Regrettably, this glasses is the only one of the three major products promoted by Meta that is not sold through Meta’s own channels. If you want to buy Stories, you need to go to Ray-Ban’s official website to buy (but Meta also provides a small card with a QR code in the store, and customers can scan the code to jump to the Ray-Ban official website purchase page.)

Since Facebook changed its name to Meta last year, the company has undoubtedly been “All-in” in the Metaverse.

In Meta’s view, the concept of “digital life” may no longer exist in the future – because a considerable part of people’s daily life will take place in the virtual space of the so-called Metaverse, the boundary between digital life and real life will become increasingly blurred.

Under such a premise, Meta actually opened an offline and physical store, which is indeed a bit surprising.

One of the most obvious reasons to open a store is to get user feedback.

For Meta Reality Labs, which works just above the store, the brick-and-mortar store provides the team with a closer channel for feedback from users. They only need to go downstairs and stay in the store for a while, and they can directly observe how users use Quest and Metaverse products, and have opinions and suggestions on these products and technologies.

Of course, for Meta, the ultimate goal of this offline event is to help them further design a retail strategy suitable for the future Metaverse era.

Martin Gilliard, the head of Meta Store, said that the meaning of this store’s existence is not to sell the concept of the Metaverse, but to provide people with a channel to contact the Metaverse and learn more about it.

“In the Meta Store, we want consumers to be able to pick up products and experience them for themselves,” Gilliard said. “It’s only when people experience technology that they can understand it better. I hope today’s customers go back and Telling friends and family that we’re a cool store and worth the time to visit – that’s what we’re doing right.”
