Lens Protocol: The Next Generation of Social Media?

Modern social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, are becoming increasingly controversial. They are plagued by a range of issues including content moderation, intrusive data tracking, and misinformation that make users distrust their products. However, people can only continue to use these platforms because there is no other option. Lens Protocol hopes to change that by creating a decentralized social graph that gives users control over their social media and creates a next-generation ecosystem of content contributors and creators.

Lens Protocol was created by the team behind Aave, the largest automated market maker in DeFi with over $6 billion in total locked value. It bills itself as a “composable and decentralized social graph,” which is meant to serve as the base layer for any social media platform that chooses to build on top of it. This can be difficult to understand, so let’s take our current social media platform as an example.

On current social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, these accounts are not interoperable, which means every time you create an account, you start over, with no followers, no content, or even an avatar, which makes joining The new social media process becomes difficult. Furthermore, the companies behind these social media platforms have complete control over the data placed on their platforms: they can censor your content and use it however they want. They also sell your data and create your profile for advertising and product placement purposes. The current social media landscape turns users into products by mining their data and selling them ads.

Lens, on the other hand, works in a completely different way, solving many of the problems facing social media today. Whenever someone wants to build a new social network, they can integrate it directly with Lens so that anyone who already has a Lens profile can easily add all their content and followers to the new platform. Additionally, Lens doesn’t monetize user data, but instead gives users the option to monetize their content and earn cryptocurrency from others who see value. Lens becomes a fantastic tool for companies that want to create a social media site, but don’t want to deal with the hardest part: building a network of users and content from scratch.

The Lens protocol is native to Web3 and runs on the Polygon blockchain . By creating a profile, you can create a Lens NFT with your username and account access. It also creates, for the first time, a native way for users to buy and sell social media accounts without the risk of hacking or account recovery. Additionally, each piece of content is stored on the Interplanetary File System ( IPFS ), so it is immutable and cannot be deleted.

There are currently several different apps built on Lens, each with unique functionality and layout. With Lens, these applications can compete with each other purely on the basis of user experience and feature set, rather than based on the user’s network. It creates a level playing field through which the best apps will rise to the top. Each app can choose how to curate and moderate content, creating a wealth of unique user experiences.

Lens is currently rolling out the platform to more users and is currently in private beta. To help create organic growth and ensure the protocol works as expected, they are slowly adding new users from different crypto communities. For example, holders of certain NFTs, members of certain DAOs, and conference attendees have the opportunity to create their Lens profiles and join decentralized social media. They currently have around 50,000 profiles and 100,000 Twitter followers, suggesting that the demand and hype surrounding Lens is high.

In the future, Lens may become the de facto social media backend, as it improves on current social media in several key ways. Only time will tell if Lens will live up to its mission of being “the last social media account you have to create”, but with the support of an innovative and mature Web3 team and thousands of users, the future of this next-gen social media will look like Looks very bright.
