Chess is one of the four major chess sports and has become more and more popular after the airing of the American series “The Queen’s Game”. The Meltwater Chess Championship announced its latest tournament yesterday (17), which includes current World Champion Magnus Carlsen and Chess Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana competing. Most notably for the community, within the total prize pool of $320,000, there is a $100,000 equivalent in Bitcoin… what’s up?
The chess tournament and Bitcoin (BTC), the reason for this particular combination is that the FTX Exchange and Play Magnus Group, a publicly traded chess company, have entered into a partnership agreement and have partnered to launch an additional tournament to the Meltwater Championship Chess Tour: the FTX Crypto Cup.
Following the partnership, FTX Exchange became the official cryptocurrency exchange partner of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour and the title sponsor of the FTX Crypto Cup.
According to the event’s website, the FTX Crypto Cup will take place from May 23 to May 31, and in addition to the tour’s own prize pool of $220,000, FTX has added an additional “$100,000 in Bitcoin. The tournament will be the last professional event of the tour, and will include the participation of current World Champion Magnus Carlsen and Chess Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana.
Notably, Carlsen is also the founder of the Play Magnus Group, and for the current world champion, working with the FTX Exchange is quite exciting.
I’m a sports fan and an NBA fan, and I’m thrilled that FTX is partnering with the Champions Chess Tour to continue its deep involvement in sports events,” he said.
Andreas Thome, Chief Executive Officer of Play Magnus Group, added: This is an important moment for Play Magnus Group because we, like chess players around the world, have been watching the development of cryptocurrencies for years. And it is even more exciting for the cryptocurrency industry to host the FTX Crypto Cup, the first chess tournament of its kind.
FTX continues to expand its sports footprint
The FTX exchange, which just entered its second anniversary, has been continuously expanding its presence in the sports world this year. Early last month, FTX and the NBA Miami Heat reached a partnership to become an official partner, the Heat home arena in the next season will be officially renamed FTX Arena.
On the other hand, FTX’s company Blockfolio has signed NFL rookie Trevor Lawrence as the brand spokesman for Blockfolio.
In response, an FTX spokesperson told Movers & Shakers that the partnership with the best of the best from different tournaments is intended to attract more traditional investors to trade on the FTX platform.
FTX founder and CEO SBF said in an interview with media outlet The Block: “We’re happy to be working with more of the best in the field as a way to expand our user base.
