When looking for an NFT avatar that can symbolize yourself, you may encounter difficulties in choosing.

After all, there are already so many projects in this field, and new projects are launched almost every week. Keeping track of all the time is very difficult.

The NFT avatar is usually an image of a character, often above the shoulder, and is often used as a digital profile picture. Most NFT avatars are unique and are generated from a series of features (ie: clothing, accessories, hairstyles, etc.) through algorithms, with different scarcity. In addition, many NFT avatar projects have other built-in features, or at least will be launched in the future. For example, some NFT avatars allow the holder to enter a special virtual club, while other avatars may also be implemented in future games or multimedia projects.

Due to similar issuance frequency and capital investment, the release of these NFT avatars feels similar to the 1CO boom in early 2018. Buyers have participated in it, hoping to see a large-scale increase in prices. Avatars with rare features in popular projects often explode in the secondary market of OpenSea, and some of the avatars are sold at many times higher than their original coin price. Some buyers cast multiple such NFTs at the start of the project, hoping to quickly turn over to make a profit, while others choose to hold it for a long time, hoping that the project will become more and more popular.

The market for NFT avatars is still relatively niche, which is why many of these projects have issued 10,000, but only have 2,000 to 4,000 independent owners. Despite this, demand is still growing, as evidenced by the active Discord channel, Twitter feeds, and possibly more convincing data on the chain, as it is the NFT project that has driven the recent increase in the price of Ethereum gas.

CryptoPunks

  • Highest transaction price (above): 42K ETH
  • Base price: 21.9 ETH (according to the official website)
  • Official website: https://www.larvalabs.com/cryptopunks
  • Discord: https://discord.com/invite/tQp4pSE‌
  • Number of issuance: 10K
  • Owner: 2.6K
  • Total transaction volume: 217K ETH (this data comes from the official website, and the transaction volume on OpenSea is displayed as 207.8K ETH).

CryptoPunks is the old representative of the NFT avatar. It set a precedent for all other projects that followed in its footsteps. CryptoPunks was released by Larva Labs in June 2017 and is one of the first NFT projects on the Ethereum blockchain. At that time, CryptoPunks had a total of 10,000 uniquely generated 24×24 pixel avatars, which anyone with an Ethereum wallet could receive for free.

Now, CryptoPunks has achieved a legendary status, entered the mainstream art world, and made headlines in the auctions of major art institutions such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s. CryptoPunks is essentially the Rolex of NFT. Even the cheapest Punks can sell for tens of thousands of dollars. The rarest ones, such as zombies, apes and aliens, can cost millions of dollars.

Avastars

From cryptopunk to cyberpunk, a list of top NFT avatar projects

After the launch of CryptoPunks, the NFT avatar field was silent for a while. Then in April 2020, Avastars introduced some particularly unique elements.

Unlike most other NFT avatar projects, users can generate Avastars and view them before purchasing. The price of casting a particular Avastar varies according to the rarity of the features it generates. There are 5 generations of “Prime Avastars”, and each generation has 5000 unique Avastars. These have been cast, so now only “Replicant Avastars” can be created by combining the characteristics of existing Avastars.

The Hashmasks

Hashmasks was launched at the end of January 2021, just after Beeple’s $69 million auction at Christie’s and before the huge wave of mainstream interest in NFT. The project has collaborated with more than 70 artists around the world to create an incredibly unique artistic style. Holding Hashmask NFT will generate 10 Name Change Tokens (NCT) every day, and destroying 1830 of them will give each Hashmask a unique name.

Meebits

Meebits was also created by Larva Labs and is a unique 3D pixel character designed to be used as an avatar in Metaverse.

Meebits was first launched in May 2021, but has suffered some criticism in the wider NFT community because more than half of the supply is reserved as a free reward for CryptoPunk and Autoglyph holders. The rest is for the price of 2.5 ETH (approximately US$10,000 at launch) for others to mint in the form of a Dutch auction. Some collectors accuse Meebits of stealing money against the already wealthy coin circle veterans.

The new king of the jungle

Bored Ape Yacht Club

From cryptopunk to cyberpunk, a list of top NFT avatar projects

For most people, the price of the old gun NFT avatar project was too high, so a new project that prioritized accessibility was born. The Bored Ape Yacht Club was launched in May 2021, and the coin price of each ape-man was uniformly 0.08 ETH (approximately US$270 at the time of launch). In addition, the BAYC team has cultivated a dedicated community around the project, with a very active Discord community and providing special benefits to holders. Every BAYC NFT can enter a special “bathroom” section on the BAYC official website, where users can do digital graffiti on public walls.

Bored Ape Kennel Club

From cryptopunk to cyberpunk, a list of top NFT avatar projects

BAYC launched a spin-off project called Bored Ape Kennel Club in June 2021. Every ape owner can adopt a pet dog NFT for free. It is reported that all the 2.5% of the royalties received by BAYC from the resale of Bored Ape Kennel Club NFT on OpenSea were donated to charity.

The BAYC project set the gold standard for subsequent NFT avatar releases, inspired many similar animal-based avatar projects, and gave holders special benefits.

Endless animals

Some NFT avatar projects have innovated on BAYC’s exclusive entry mode, allowing NFT holders to participate in the community DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) or determine the future functional mechanism. Other projects bluntly stated that their NFT avatars would only be a cool status symbol.

In any case, animal head NFTs are particularly popular on OpenSea, and the rarest NFTs often have amazing transaction prices.

Bulls on the Block

Bulls holders can vote on the use of funds in the community wallet (similar to DAO).

Weird Whales did not get as much resale as the other projects mentioned, but it stood out because it was created by a 12-year-old coder. On July 19, the child posted a topic on Twitter, detailing his process of creating a cute avatar project inspired by CryptoPunks. His story caught people’s attention, and all 3,350 weird whales were purchased that day.

Endless thoughts

Of course, in addition to the above avatars, there are also many NFT avatar projects that are not based on animals. Some of them show more human-looking characters, while others incorporate elements of science fiction and fantasy. Some of them are downright weird and even offensive, such as CryptoJunks.wtf, which mocks the entire algorithm-generated avatar concept by making…algorithm-generated genitals.

These projects further promote the idea behind NFT by introducing secondary use cases for NFT tokens. Really, there is always an NFT project for everyone.

World of Women

The “Women’s World” created by artist Yam Karkai aims to bring more diversity and inclusiveness to NFT. The project only has female avatars. Some specific rarity features allow users to enter exclusive clubs. These include a royalty club that distributes 50% of OpenSea’s secondary sales royalties to members; an investor club that will share the profits of the WOW fund created to support other female arts in the NFT space; and a curatorial exhibition People’s Club, which helps decide which arts the WOW Fund will buy.

The Vogu Collective

From cryptopunk to cyberpunk, a list of top NFT avatar projects

The Vogu Collective has a particularly unique artistic style, combining street fashion with robot characters. Vogu was just released on July 26, 2021, but as one of the most popular projects in the NFT field, it quickly gained traction. Vogu’s future plans are still vague, but the project team has already proposed to create multimedia stories and other character-based artworks.

Although Animetas has not yet started, cyberpunk art inspired by animation has aroused great interest in the NFT community. The project has ambitious plans, including physical and virtual versions of retro-style arcade games and merchandise in the meta universe. In addition, Animetas also has NFT pets in the form of Animonkeys, and in the future there will be a fusion mechanism that allows them to appear in the final arcade game.
