First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in “interstellar drifting”

Please keep this first-hand experience I personally experienced.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

Recently, the much- anticipated Shanghai Planetarium officially opened.

The tip of the iceberg revealed by the previous stress test has already stoked people’s appetites.

Located on the shore of Dishui Lake, 70 kilometers away from the city center, this world’s largest planetarium, which cost about 1 billion yuan to set up the exhibition, is the hottest new landmark in Shanghai this summer.

Having witnessed its shocking appearance like the orbit of a celestial body, and then experienced 3 hours of interstellar drifting personally, I only left in my heart: “Why does time pass so fast? I want to do it again, no, ten times!”

When it first became known to the public , this imaginative building was jokingly called the “Motorola flip phone”. In fact, its peculiar shape is the incarnation of “gravity”.

The round skylight at the main entrance is a large cantilevered steel structure with a length of 36 meters and a span of 61 meters, which is the first case in China.

Inside the museum, it is by no means as simple as looking at the exhibition. Of the more than 300 exhibits, 85% are originals, 50% include interactive experiences, and 4 distinctive theaters, including the world’s most advanced multifunctional 8K ultra-high-definition dome theater.

Experience projects are the most sought-after.

“Flying over the Milky Way” is more exciting than Disney’s “Flying to the Horizon” and more difficult to arrange. In the “Flying” exhibition area, I used a VR helmet to experience a real moon walk, and even entered the 1:1 restored Tianhe core capsule, and “hand-operated” the docking with the “Tiangong-1” space station…

At this stage, there are more professional 65-centimeter adaptive optics solar telescope (EAST) and one-meter bifocal telescope (DOT) that are not yet open to the public, which can observe the sun during the day and the moon and starry sky at night, respectively.

With so many great projects, adult tickets are only priced at 30 yuan, and students only have half the price .

The Shanghai Planetarium is a branch of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum , located on the bank of the Dishui Lake in Lingang District.

As the largest planetarium in the world, it covers an area of about 58,000 square meters and a building area of about 38,000 square meters. In addition to the main hall, it also includes Wangshu Observatory, Xihe Sun Tower and a starry sky exploration camp.

The chief designer of the Shanghai Planetarium is one of the partners from ennead architectural design firm, Thomas Wong. He is also the chief creator of many important projects such as Lingang Science and Technology City and the Natural History Museum of Utah, USA.

When you observe the logo of the Shanghai Planetarium, you can see three interconnected spheres. The image is taken from the circular skylight, the inverted dome and the planetarium sphere on the main hall.

They consist of track connected together , it is the simulation since the Big Bang, uninterrupted movement of celestial objects.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

At the main entrance of the planetarium, I couldn’t help but admire how ingenious this golden round skylight was designed.

Sunlight passes through the golden round hole, and the cast light spot moves in the square and reflecting pool like a sundial, recording the passage of time.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

I heard that at noon on the summer solstice not long ago, the light spot exactly coincided with the circular mark in the center of the ground. It was indeed a bright spot designed from the beginning.

After entering the hall, I immediately rushed to the most eye-catching planetarium sphere in the building.

Standing on the B1 floor and looking up from a close distance, because the part embedded in the roof is hidden, it feels that this huge silver-gray sphere with an outer diameter of 30 meters is basically suspended on the ground. The dome theater inside can hold 200 people, and there are currently three astronomy movies of 20-25 minutes scheduled to be shown here.

Walking back to the atrium of the planetarium, looking up, is the last sphere-the glass inverted dome. In the future, it will become an excellent stargazing place for astronomers.

Immediately after looking down, there is a 720-degree spiral-shaped long ramp, extending like a cantilever of a galaxy from the top three to the first.

At the center of the first floor is a silver Foucault pendulum hanging from the center of the dome.

Without the action of external force, this scientific device invented in 1851 will slowly rotate in a clockwise direction, thus confirming the existence of the earth’s rotation.

It is the first demonstration exhibit in the museum.

Stepping into the door on the left side of the main entrance, this journey to explore the three major exhibition areas “Homeland”, “Universe” and “Journey”, as well as more than 300 exhibits inside, officially begins.

02

Starting from “Homeland”

Passing through a few mysterious tunnels with twinkling stars in the dark, a huge earth suddenly filled my sight. I immediately understood the meaning of the word “home” at the door.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

This earth is not static. If you stop and observe, you can see its 4.5 billion years of long evolution in less than 4 minutes.

Inside, is the first theater in the exhibition area-the “Astronomical Hall” that can accommodate 100 people.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

Although it’s a theater, there is no need to sit down.

When I lay down comfortably on the lazy couch, with a simulated green lawn under my feet, and looking up at the dazzling starry sky projected by the most advanced optical planetarium in the world , I suddenly felt that the atmosphere was really romantic.

In the 9 minutes of the film screening, I completely forgot that I was in the planetarium and felt that this was a cool outdoor star-gazing night.

Homeland not only represents the earth, but also the entire solar system.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

Here, I faced the sun that continuously releases energy, observed the moon with an AR display, and watched how Saturn’s great ring rotates…No matter which planet you are interested in, you can find an exclusive space for exploration.

On the planetary data wall, they can also be compared in all directions.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

If you want to directly feel the difference in gravity, pick up the “Newton’s apples” one by one, and you will know that you have “a few kilos” on it.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

In the “home” grew up, there will always encounter some “outer space visitors .”

What I saw was a collection of 70 meteorites from the Moon, Mars, Vesta, etc., including the largest one of the only Changxing meteorite that fell in Shanghai.

If you want to look more closely, you can touch it on the screen in front of the display wall to 360 degrees or even zoom in.

Moving forward, we ushered in the second theater in the homeland exhibition area, which is also my favorite among all theaters-Leaping the Milky Way.

After opening the door, facing a small aircraft capable of carrying 9 people, I couldn’t help but suspect that I had come to the amusement park.

In fact, it is much more exciting than an amusement park.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

Buckle the seat belt, the aircraft slowly turned around, and a huge curved screen appeared, announcing that a space roaming mission was about to begin.

During the 8-minute viewing, the aircraft ups and downs with the plot, and various astronomical wonders are dizzying.

The 18 people full of two aircrafts screamed in excitement and excitement. I felt like a crew member of the Enterprise in “Star Trek”, on a great adventure to explore civilization outside the department.

This is the last project in this exhibition area.

Boarding the escalator, starting from home, an unknown vast universe, slowly revealing his true face.

03

What is “universe”

If I were to imagine what it looked like outside the galaxy, it would be like the long corridor that I saw when I entered the “Universe” exhibition area.

It is dark, quiet, composed of countless nebulae, and there are always unexpected delights.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

As I approached and waved, the ” wormholes ” suddenly opened one by one, revealing the mysteries of the universe one by one.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

Here, first discuss the concept of “time and space” in the universe.

How big is the universe? Through model comparison, I found that if the earth is regarded as 1, the currently observable universe has reached 10 to the 26th power.

Look at the sky ruler and the “big calendar” that compresses the history of the entire universe into one year, and then walk through a web that shows the curvature of time and space, and you reach the magical gravitational zone.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

The most eye-catching is the two big “black holes” on the wall.

It is the door to the next space. When I stepped into it, it looked like I was sucked into the boundless realm of pure blackness.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

Inside the “black hole”, I followed the guide and stood in front of the projection screen. My image appeared on the wall, gradually being pulled by the black hole’s gravitational force into a long thin line, and finally completely swept away.

So intuitive, it turns out that this is the “noodle effect”.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

“Light” and “Elements” are also important parts of the universe.

In front of a familiar periodic table of elements, slide the button to different periods in the formation of the universe to see when different elements were produced.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

At the end of the exhibition area, there is a Suppose Theater that can accommodate 50 people.

If you are the ruler of the universe, you can adjust various parameters of the universe at will, such as gravity, speed of light, dark matter content, etc., will it still be what it is now?

Like the name of the theater, this film is to answer these whimsical ideas that begin with “what if”.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

While watching the movie, I was surprised to find that the formation of life is so hard-won, and only a small change may disappear.

In the end, the curtain opened, and the familiar earth appeared particularly blue and bright in the darkness.

Human beings are small but precious accidents in this huge universe.

Endless “journey”

It is the seemingly insignificant human beings who began to explore the history of the universe thousands of years ago.

From the astronomical thinking that humans sprouted in the ancient times, to the modern astronomical revolution, to the modern aerospace industry-the last exhibition area, this long and tortuous and never-ending journey has been shown to me.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

Galileo, Kepler , Ptolemy, Euler… Seeing the original books of these astronomical philosophers, I know that this has condensed their life’s hard work.

One of the most precious is the English first edition of “The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy” under the portrait of Newton. It was in this work published in 1729 that he first proposed the law of universal gravitation.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

After passing through the “Astronomical Digital Laboratory” where you can experience the working environment of astronomers, at the end of the journey is the dream of flying to the sky.

Here is the history of China’s achievements in the aerospace industry.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

Seeing the highly restored models of the Zhurong, Chang’e-2 and Chang’e-5 lunar rover, and the soil covered with wheel prints, there is an illusion that I have really left the earth.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

Surprisingly, wearing a helmet in the “VR Moon Walk” experience zone, I really enjoyed the weightlessness of landing on the moon.

When my toes touched the ground lightly, I immediately bounced into the air and stretched my hand forward, as if I could touch the lunar rover.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

The realism brought by the 1:1 restored sky and core cabin on the opposite side is even stronger.

A month ago, the Shenzhou XII manned spacecraft was successfully launched. Now, three astronauts are working in the Tianhe core module.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

Not only the exterior is restored, but the interior is also exactly the same. I even used the lever to manipulate the robotic arm outside the core compartment and experienced how it felt when docked with Tiangong-1.

Not only the console, but also fitness equipment, microwave ovens, toilets, beds and other living facilities are also available here. It is worthy of the astronaut’s base camp and a warm home.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

Slowly outward along the trail, and finally came to the entrance of the inverted dome.

If you stand at the center of the dome and look up at the sky at night, you will find that the vastness of the stars that were originally far away occupy our field of vision and appear so close.

As long as you dare to dream, in this brave and fearless journey to heaven, there is nothing impossible.

Spend a fulfilling day in the planetarium

In addition to the main exhibition area, the Shanghai Planetarium also has three special exhibition areas.

Among them, the “China Asking the Sky” on the first floor fully demonstrates China’s exploration of astronomy from ancient times to the present and the great achievements it has made along the way.

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

And the “Sailing to Mars” exhibition area next door will lead people to board a “spacecraft”, sail to the future Mars base, and explore the high-tech laboratory there.

As for the “Curious Planet” located on the B1 floor, it is an adventure amusement park exclusively for preschool children. Here, these little dreamers will conduct a 45-minute expedition to alien planets .

First experience of the world’s largest planetarium: indulging in "interstellar drifting"

On the left side of the “Chinese Asking the Sky” exhibition area is the souvenir shop of the planetarium. Inside all kinds of astronomy-related cultural and creative gem everywhere, which the planetarium building inspired logo and patch me the most heart.
