Does iPhone XR support Dolby Atmos? Support, just not so smart

Can hear, but not completely

According to MacRumors, Apple’s latest documents have deleted iPhone XR, iPad mini 5, iPad Air 3, and iPad 6th to 8th generations (basic iPads released from 2018 to 2020) for Apple Music’s built-in speaker Dolby Atmos. Spatial audio support.

So, does the iPhone XR bid farewell to Dolby Atmos? Will it affect the function of sound changing with head rotation when wearing AirPods Pro? How to use iPhone XR to play Dolby Atmos audio? APPSO has conducted some tests in response to the above problems.

When using Apple Music on iPhone XR and other models, is there no Dolby Atmos sound?

of course not.

First, we upgraded the iPhone XR out of the list and the iPhone 12 mini in the list to the latest beta system. In the interface of “Settings>Music>Dolby Atmos”, we can see that there is no difference between the two. . Dolby Atmos can be set, so what functions of devices such as iPhone XR have been deleted from this document?

In fact, there are some misunderstandings here. What the iPhone XR loses is not the spatial audio of Dolby Atmos, but the automatic opening function of Dolby Atmos’s spatial audio in the case of external playback.

To listen to Dolby Atmos on iPhone or iPad, you need to meet the following conditions:

  • Update iPhone or iPad to iOS or iPadOS 14.6 or later;
  • In “Settings>Music>Spatial Audio”, select “Automatic” or “Always On”.

If you choose “Auto”, Apple Music will automatically play in Dolby Atmos when it is supported. But in order to play automatically, the device must meet some conditions. One of the conditions is the model limit. In the domestic document list, models such as iPhone XR still exist, but in the US official website, these models have been deleted.

Therefore, if you use iPhone XR to play Apple Music, it is not possible to automatically turn on spatial audio that supports Dolby Atmos.

In the automatic mode, we use iPhone XR and iPhone 12 mini, open the test song New Normal of Apple Music space audio experience, and listen to them with the loudest sound. You can feel the slight difference between the two, but it is not obvious. After all, the iPhone’s speakers are small in size, so you can’t experience the best effects of Dolby Atmos spatial audio.

Does it affect the “head tracking” function of AirPods Pro?

Does not affect.

We also use the iPhone XR to open the Apple Music spatial audio experience test song New Normal, put on AirPods Pro, turn the head, you can clearly feel the change in the size of the sound in both ears. Dynamic head tracking is a function of AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, and there is no difference between different phones.

Does it affect the Dolby Atmos function of other apps?

Does not affect.

We used Bilibili to open the “[Dolby Vision HDR · Atmos] Chinese Demonstration Film”, and compared the experience of opening Dolby Atmos with the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone XR when wearing AirPods Pro and not wearing AirPods Pro. It also compared the iPhone 12 mini’s experience when wearing AirPrds Pro and putting the speakers outside when Dolby Atmos was turned on and off.

  • When wearing AirPods Pro, both iPhone 12 mini and iPhone XR can clearly feel the difference in sound layering.
  • When placed outside, there is little difference between iPhone 12 mini and iPhone XR.
  • When comparing the iPhone 12 mini alone, the effect of turning on Dolby Atmos and wearing AirPods Pro is significantly better than that of not turning on Dolby Atmos, and there is little difference in the external amplifier.

Generally speaking, you can clearly feel the difference in sound layering after putting on the earphones. No matter which device is used for external playback, the feeling is not so obvious.

Therefore, although the iPhone XR does not support automatic activation after the system is updated (maybe, the official website of Apple China has not updated the document), the Dolby Atmos sound of Apple Music’s built-in speakers will only affect the experience when Apple Music is played directly (if you care about the It’s better than the panoramic sound “always on”). Whether it is wearing AirPods or other headphones that support Dolby Atmos, or an external speaker that supports Dolby Atmos, there will be no impact.

If you are not a music enthusiast, you may not feel the difference. If you are a music enthusiast, how can you only use mobile phone speakers?

We don’t know why Apple removed these devices from the support list, but as long as you don’t need to use the iPhone’s built-in speaker to play Apple Music songs, it will not affect you at all.
