Detailed explanation of Altered State Machine: Innovative exploration of using AI and machine learning to evolve NFT

Introduction: At the beginning of March, the AI Metaverse platform Altered State Machine announced the completion of a seed round of financing. The investors include Warner Music Group, Coinbase Ventures, Delphi Digital, Flamingo DAO, Outlier Ventures and many other well-known institutions.

According to public information, this is an innovative project that combines NFT, artificial intelligence and machine learning. The market has been very popular recently. This article introduces the basic characteristics, operation mode and participation methods of the project.

What is an Altered State Machine (ASM)?

Altered State Machine is an NFT platform that aims to advance the innovation of NFT platforms by introducing AI and machine learning to explore more possible Metaverse worlds.

There are numerous potential use cases for Altered State Machines and will continue to grow as the Metaverse infrastructure improves in connectivity.

The Altered State Machine team has been excitedly promoting and releasing the $ASTO token recently, and many smart people have already paid attention to this project in advance, which also has a clear partnership with the most valuable NFT series currently.

The vision of the Altered State Machine is to be a protocol for NFT ownership and monetization using AI technology.

The project is at the cutting edge of technology, and understanding the knowledge points in it may encounter obstacles and is still in its infancy. There may be many untapped pockets of value, and for those investors willing to take some risk, value may emerge.

Some features of the project are difficult to understand, so this article attempts to interpret them separately.

It’s worth mentioning that the team is in the process of filing a patent for a technology, and while some might see this as an anti-web3 open source ethos, it may sometimes be necessary to build a moat, especially with projects like this that need highlights to grab attention, and patents The role of small projects is to prevent “tech giants” from annexing.

What is an AI agent?

The AI agent has 3 components: Brains, Memories, Form.

Brains consist of the core properties of an AI agent, called a “genome matrix.”

Genome matrix values correspond to statistics such as strength, speed and size (in gaming) or risk tolerance and randomness (in finance).

On top of that, Brains are trained with AI/Machine Learning (AI/ML) to learn the properties needed for a specific target (game, robotics), but may take longer, train in a different way, similar to how People with innate abilities train to become experts with the same skills.

This structure would introduce some type of randomness into the virtual world (thus enhancing its depth), similar to how genes can generate humans with different abilities.

In October 2021, the AIFA (football NFT game made by the ASM team) launched by the team in the Genesis Box (4 characters and 1 Brains), of which Brains is a part.

Brains can currently be purchased on Opensea and checked for rarity/IQ at the alpha farm. Lots of high IQ/rare Brains are being sold at reserve prices (do your own research on potential value NFTs). 8,500 BrainsNFTs have been sold on Opensea, with 1,500 more for sale.

In Q2, users will be able to stake $ASTO to mint new Brains (Gen2), the more stakes the higher the success rate. It is unclear how the staking mechanism will work.

Gen2 Brains will not have features such as breeding and will not accept future airdrops. And Gen1 Brains have those capabilities.

Memories refer to the “training” strategies that AI agents complete in a machine learning “gym.”

Gyms will be backed by GPU cloud computing providers (similar to miners), providing behavioral policies for each agent, with fees paid in $ASTO tokens.

The training results for each agent are unique, and each time training is completed an output is created and minted as a separate NFT, which is then marked on Brains, effectively “upgrading” skills, abilities, etc.

The gym owner is usually the creator of the NFT series, and the gym host is the Metaverse ecosystem.

For example, users can train NFT characters in the Passage Metaverse’s Strange Clan NFT series to improve the NFT’s attributes and thus perform better in battle.

NFT holders throughout the Metaverse ecosystem will incentivize gym owners to help improve these AI agents.

This mainly refers to the visual appearance. This will vary based on the capabilities of the agent. For example, if the agent is a trading bot, it won’t train its skins, but if it’s a fighting game, their size or appearance may matter.

Traditional NFTs that already exist (such as Punks, Bored Apes or Azukis) can be considered “Forms”.

The above three NFT elements will form a fully functional “AI agent”.

As mentioned above, “Memories” are individually minted NFTs, so an agent can have many Memories NFTs while only having 1 Brains and 1 Form NFT.

Brains are required for all proxies, and Brains are used across different projects (gaming, Metaverse, DeFi), but some proxies may be better suited for DApps than playing football or doing math equations).

Memories and Form will have some overlap with similar projects, such as two similar games in the same virtual world, or similar games in different virtual worlds. As more and more projects use these technologies, ASM will also grow rapidly.

Proof-of-concept first game AIFA (AI Football Association)

AIFA is the first game to use an NFT proxy created by ASM. Form is part of Brains’ unboxing process. Each blind box has 1 Brains and 4 players.

The game isn’t live yet, but will essentially be a soccer game where users will compete against other four-a-side soccer teams. All aspects of the player’s Form can be modified, training will improve the NFT properties, and various other variables will be introduced later.

Discord has a community channel for in-depth discussions about the game, including team notes and tips on how the game will work.

$ASTO token

The token powering the ASM ecosystem is called $ASTO and the total token supply is 2,384,000,000.

Token Features:

  • Governance
  • Buy training time for the agent
  • Mint (by staking) new agents/new Brains
  • P2E
  • Liquidity Mining/Incentives
  • In-game/ecosystem transactions (charges, upgrades and skins)
  • Further utilities that the DAO will contain

Check out the Token Economics section of the white paper for more details on circulating supply and inflation, below is Brian’s interpretation of the token.

ASM has also published an FAQ that covers detailed information about the token.

How to get $ASTO

  • Own a Genesis Brains and claim the airdrop. Users can check Brains sold on Opensea on the Brain Claim Check to see if they have claimed the airdrop.
  • AIFA characters will have the potential to earn $ASTO in the future. However, the details are still unclear, and users can purchase AIFA’s NFT through Opensea.
  • Take part in the Discovery auction on June 4th at 23:00 GMT. ASM has published an FAQ regarding this auction.Simply put, $ASTO in the discovery pool is locked, and only USDC can be added to it until the end of the auction.Tokens will be locked for 12 weeks, during which time users will be rewarded with $ASTO.
  • Buy after auction. The discovery pool will be converted to the uniswap pool ASTO-USDC.

Why is all this exciting?

I think NFTs are going to be used for a variety of purposes, and in the next ten years, everything will be digitized. Currently the most valuable NFTs are the avatar (PFP) avatar series, which effectively combines art and society to create strong communities, such as Bored Ape Yacht Club, CryptoPunks, and the recent fiery Azuki.

These series of NFTs are likely to go down in history with their success stories, but given BAYC’s “flip” of Punks, it’s clear that being first doesn’t mean staying first forever. BAYC’s success may have been due to making its Apes IP available to owners, and when expanding into other areas, the team realized that success in the digital web3 world came first, so the Metaverse was recently announced.

I think there will be more such projects in the future that allow the owner of their NFT to be able to evolve and further develop it, while also allowing the owner to keep their original Form.

The biggest partner the team has disclosed so far is, which also includes the ongoing construction of the Metaverse Flufs, Party Bears, Seekers, and Thingies.

Through tweets, whitepapers and Discord information, some specific NFT families such as BAYC, Punks and Meebits are also considering using ASM functionality to make their NFTs (“Form”) AI agents (add Brains and “Memories”) and then evolve and derived more things.

Essentially, I see this project as an NFT infrastructure. Combine that with the team’s pending patents, and whichever NFT PFP series dominates, or which web3 game stands out, could be the most important stalwart in this space. Introducing AI machine learning to NFTs is a no-brainer for anyone, and the ASM team is currently the best at it.

Delphi Digital is known for its ability to grasp trends in the crypto space. It has previously invested in thousands of tokens, including AXS, and participated in Axie Infinity to promote and help it improve its token economics. Delphi Digital is also discussing and promoting the projects, and some individuals have made investments.

In addition, the team’s latest round of financing comes not only from Coinbase and other web3 funds, but also traditional VCs and media companies such as Warner Music.

How to participate in ASM?

Broadly speaking, there are currently only three ways to participate in ASM:

  • Buy Brains
  • Buy AIFA Characters
  • Buy $ASTO (lock $ASTO with ongoing auctions and earn, or buy on uniswap after June 4th)

After the $ASTO airdrop, Brains price dropped from a high of 6-7 ETH to around 3 ETH (for those NFTs that claimed the airdrop).

I think Gen1 Brains is currently the “safest” price point, and will increase in demand as the ecosystem becomes more practical in the future, and has significant advantages over Gen2 Brains. It is the first ASM NFT that is valued by the team.

The base price of AIFA characters is around 0.14 ETH, which is much cheaper than Brains. The status of the airdrop claim is still unclear. I don’t think their long-term value will be too stable and more likely to perform well in the short term, especially after AIFA rolls out a full version.

$ASTO tokens had a circulating supply of 55 million at launch. The current auction price is 0.36 USDC (expect some price volatility a few minutes before the end). Considering the project is a pioneer in this space, with a technical moat, ASM will provide the infrastructure to become many NFTs, coupled with the team and belief, I think this is a seriously undervalued price.
