Arbitrum, the Layer 2 star project that V-God praised, goes live, and Rollup scaling solution will see new progress?

The hottest “technology” event in the community recently is undoubtedly the launch of Arbitrum.

Arbitrum, the Layer 2 star project that V-God praised, goes live, and Rollup scaling solution will see new progress?

The reason is that last year, V-God has already set the tone that Rollup will be the main means of expansion for ETH, and in the future, it will also bear the historical responsibility of ETH’s “global settlement layer” together with sharding in the 2.0 sharding era. After setting the tone, LRC (Roadmark Protocol) is the first project to implement the Rollup solution, but LRC is essentially just an application, not a universal Rollup solution.

Arbitrum, which just went live on the main network, is technically the first “universal Rollup Layer2 scaling solution” in the history of the main network (OP went live on the test network earlier, but the main network will be in July and August).

In the past few days, I’ve seen people in many communities ask: “Which is better, Arbitrum or Matic? Which is more powerful, Arbitrum, Optimism or Zk-Sync? Aren’t they both Rollup?”

But there are many introductory and comparative articles about Layer2 solutions, so this article intends to completely put aside the technology and completely explain the difference between these few.

The downside is that the scenario simulation inside is not entirely accurate from a technical point of view, but only the need for “vernacular” explanation, to understand the details of several Rollup solutions friends, or should go to the technical level to compare the explanation of the article.

We will introduce four differences, namely, the difference between Rollup and sidechain; the difference between OP and ZK; the difference between Optimism and Arbitrum in OP; and the difference between Zk-Rollup and Validum in ZK.

Before talking about these differences, we need to make up a scene: the whole chain of ETH is seen as NATO in its heyday, and all the ETH miners are seen as the troops stationed in NATO countries all over NATO, and each exchange is imagined as a “paid armed protection financial escort”.

01、Difference between Rollup and Sidechain

Arbitrum, the Layer 2 star project that V-God praised, goes live, and Rollup scaling solution will see new progress?

Matic (Polygon) is undoubtedly the hottest Layer2 at the moment, but strictly speaking, the current Matic is not a Layer2, it is just a sidechain.

What is the difference between Layer1 (specifically ETH) and Sidechain Layer2 (specifically Rollup)?

Layer1 You are incredibly comfortable with the exchange that takes place on ETH, i.e. the financial escrow initiated within NATO. Because you feel safe, after all, you are paying money to the military, which is the most powerful armed force in the world and has an excellent international reputation.

The exchange on Sidechain-Matic is equivalent to the fact that this financial escort of yours does not take place in NATO territory, but in India, where the Indian military is in charge of the escort.

If you start and end in India, then the Indian military escorts the entire shipment, and NATO has nothing to do with it. If you start in India and end in NATO territory, then the convoy will be escorted by Indian troops first and then handed over to NATO troops when the convoy reaches the junction of Indian and NATO territories.

So the difference between the side chain and Layer1 (pure NATO territory) compared to the following points (in terms of security alone).

1, the Indian army is not as strong as NATO, theoretically there is a risk of terrorists hijacking your convoy in the territory.

2, even if there is no terrorist hijacking, there may be the possibility that the Indian army greedy you escort too much money, secretly give you a part of the seizure.

You may want to escort 10 million from Indian territory to NATO territory, but when the Indian army and NATO troops hand over the car but only 5 million left, NATO troops will only believe the number of money seen and the Indian army documents, the remaining 5 million by the escort of the Indian army to swallow, no doubt, the document also made a fake.

This is why it is said that the security of the side chain is lower than Layer1, because the nodes (military) are owned by the side chain autonomously and have no relationship with the main chain.

Other high-speed chains, such as Near, Ftm, connect ETH by bridge, you can imagine these chains as Korea, Japan and other countries that have exchange or trade with NATO, the security of each country varies, depending on the strength of the army, and the reputation.

So what is Rollup?

Rollup is the equivalent of – if you think of Arbitrum as the continent of Africa – a land where the armed escorts are the direct lineage of NATO forces, or armed robots under the direct remote control of NATO forces.

Then you should easily see, in Rollup above the exchange (financial escort), is also very safe, safer than all the side chains, the degree of security close to, or equivalent to the NATO territory of the financial escort.

02 、 Difference between Optimistic Rollup and ZK Rollup

Arbitrum, the Layer 2 star project that V-God praised, goes live, and Rollup scaling solution will see new progress?

OP : Optimistic Rollup – Optimistic Rollup
Zk : ZK Rollup – Zero Knowledge Proof Rollup

What is the difference? With the above scene pavement, these two differences are actually not difficult to understand: OP is the full-fledged troops; ZK is armed robots.

How to understand it?

OP – when you are on the African road financial escort, because the full-fledged troops are equipped from NATO, firepower, terrorists or something you are not worried about. The only problem is that when your escort is going to enter NATO territory, the first-line troops and NATO troops start to hand over, and then your funds need to be frozen for a few days.

Because of the full-fledged troops in charge of the escort, there is the possibility of seeing money and blacking out, so it is not theoretically impossible for the Indian army to give you a scenario where 10 million is deducted from 5 million, after all, it is only full-fledged, and we are only optimistic at first that they have as good a reputation as the NATO army by default.

Assuming that the escort is the first line of the French army, then the first line of the British army can challenge the freeze period and challenge the first line of France to “do something” during the escort. Since the first time the escort all kinds of documents and financial proof, the full force must be faxed to the NATO home army, and the full force of the army, is placed in a NATO home war correspondent to record all the things that happened on the road, so the NATO army can prove through the way of trial whether the French full force of the army in the escort to do something.

If it is confirmed that they are indeed “guilty”, then the French troops will be fined or “docked”, and the funds will be frozen for the duration of the “challenge” and the “trial”. “trial”.

ZK – NATO military direct remote control of armed robots, firepower, at the same time, there is no possibility of “messing with things”. After all, the robots do not have independent thinking, and will not think to greed your 5 million, their integrity is essentially the same as the control of their NATO troops is exactly the same.

So when escorting from Africa into NATO territory, your funds do not exist what freeze time, a few minutes after the handover ceremony to get, you can be replaced by robots to continue escorting human troops.

This is why V God said short-term look at the OP, long-term look at the ZK reason. zk has the equivalent of L1 security and a very short exit time of funds, but the remote control of armed robots naturally much more difficult than the direct use of human troops, the whole system is still under development, is estimated to meet with you in the next few months.

03, OP inside Optimism and Arbitrum difference

Arbitrum, the Layer 2 star project that V-God praised, goes live, and Rollup scaling solution will see new progress?

The main difference between Optimism and Arbitrum is intuitive – when an escort enters NATO territory and a challenge is made by another full-fledged force, the “trial” is handled differently.

OP is to have NATO forces do a time machine back to the moment the escort started, and have NATO forces run through the escort again in its entirety instead of the full force, and compare. The advantage is to get it done once, the disadvantage is that the time machine time use is longer cost more.

Arbitrum is by first watching the video footage of the war correspondent, find the section with problems, and then by NATO troops in a time machine back to that problematic point in time, to find out where there is a problem

The good thing is that the cost is lower because the time machine is only on for a while, the bad thing is that the overall time spent is longer than the time machine directly at the beginning, because it takes time to watch the video first to find the point of divergence in that location.

In fact, OP and Arbitrum there is a technical OVM and AVM virtual machine difference, a Container and Virtualization, but one is relatively too technically oriented, has not met the main theme of this article, the second because too much technically oriented, the author himself is not particularly thorough understanding, so it is difficult to bring this difference into our The author himself does not understand it very well, so it is difficult to bring this difference into our “armed escort” scenario, so if you are interested, you can find information to study.

  1. The difference between MatterLabs and Starkware in Zk

Originally, there were some differences between the two, mainly in that Matter Labs used ZK-Rollup and Starkware used Validium, which is similar to Zk-Rollup.

But now the difference is very small, because Matter Labs’ Zk-Sync uses ZK-Rollup, but the new Zk-porter uses Validium, and Starkware’s two products, StarkNET and StartEx, also use both Zk-Rollup and Validium.

So now the difference is mainly in the details, the zero-knowledge proofs used by MatterLabs’ Zk-Sync are called Zk-SNARKs – Simple Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Proofs; the zero-knowledge proofs used by Starware are called Zk-Starks – Simple Fully Transparent Zero-Knowledge Proofs.

The difference can be interpreted as one is an armed robot controlled by IOS and the other is an armed robot controlled by Android.

What can be said here instead is the difference between Zk-Rollup and Validium. The difference is simple: ZK-Rollup’s data are all on the chain, while Validium’s data are all off the chain.

What does it mean when put into our scenario is actually quite simple.

Zk-Rollup- NATO military war correspondents are following the armed robots all the way, and everything that happens on the way is recorded and transmitted to NATO headquarters. As you can imagine, this way is safer, however the overhead is higher, you have to shoot an extra reporter and also shoot all the way to transmit data along the way.

Validium- There are no war correspondents, only robots, and no one records what happens on the road. What happens? Robot firepower, the terrorists are not worried. But what if there is a super-duper hacker on the road who unknowingly hacks into the robot and takes the user’s money, and the controller of the robot knows nothing about it?

Because there is no reporter, no video, the user can only eat a dud. So Validium’s security is weaker than Zk-Rollup’s, but the benefits are obvious, no need to shoot reporters to follow, and no need to shoot all the way to upload data, the cost is much lower. This is also why Validuim’s performance is much higher than Zk-Rollup.

After all, you can’t have both the bear’s paw and the fish.

Although not rigorous and accurate, but I hope at least this article can let you probably understand the side chain, Rollup, OP family and Zk family of those “grudges”.
