Apple’s long-rumored VR/AR headset could reportedly be delayed until 2023 due to a combination of technical issues. Citing people familiar with Apple’s plans, the report said the device was due to be announced during WWDC in June 2022, followed by an official launch later this year. However, recent development issues may force Apple to delay the launch of VR/AR headsets.
The VR/AR headset is said to feature dual Ultra HD 8K displays including built-in eye tracking technology, 12 cameras capable of hand tracking, a replaceable headband and numerous controller options. But there are currently overheating issues, as well as camera and software challenges. The headset is rumored to have two chips, at least one of which is comparable in performance to the M1 Pro in the latest MacBook Pro model. The thermal demands of this chip are believed to be the cause of the overheating problem.
According to Bloomberg, the headset has been in development since 2015 and aims to replace the iPhone within the next 10 years. The company is looking to get vendors ready for a launch in early 2023, and next year’s developer conference will reportedly focus on VR and AR applications for headsets.
The company is also reportedly working on a more advanced pair of dedicated AR glasses, which is said to go live sometime after the VR/AR headset is released. The upcoming iOS 16 update will reportedly set the stage for an upcoming VR/AR headset, which means an official announcement may be imminent. The latest update, codenamed “Sydney”, is expected to hit iOS devices this June.
Apple had considered pricing the device above $2,000 with more advanced display, chip and audio technology than its rivals. While Apple appears to be committed to VR/AR technology, the company has shown little interest in building its own virtual worlds, focusing instead on delivering high-quality burst content.
