In a report outlining Apple’s wireless charging, Gurman said Apple is “still exploring” a wireless charger that could charge multiple devices, including the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods, at the same time.
Apple first announced AirPower in September 2017 and said the charging product would be available sometime in 2018. But in 2018, AirPower didn’t happen, and after months of rumors of development issues, Apple canceled the project in March 2019.
AirPower failed because Apple engineers were unable to fix multiple issues affecting the device, including interference problems and overheating.
Since AirPower’s cancellation, there have been rumors that Apple is still working on some sort of charging mat, but most of them have been ambiguous. In addition to an AirPower-like wireless charger, Apple is said to be working “in-house” on other wireless charging methods that could work over longer distances.
