For the new iPad Pro, Apple is testing a glass back plate instead of an aluminum case, which will allow the new iPad Pro to support wireless charging capabilities.
Current iPads still charge via USB-C or Lightning, and enabling wireless charging will bring iPhone and iPad closer together in terms of functionality. Development of the new iPad Pro is still in the early stages, and Bloomberg says Apple’s plans could change or be scrapped by next year.
Most wireless chargers are tailored for the iPhone, so wireless charging for the iPad may require a dedicated charging device, but rumors suggest that if Apple does choose to make the iPad Pro support wireless charging, it will plan to use MagSafe.
Additionally, Apple is adding wireless reverse charging to the new iPad Pro. There were rumors that the iPhone 11 would have come with bi-directional wireless charging, but that didn’t end up happening. However, Bloomberg says that Apple did explore this feature.
In addition to MagSafe for iPad charging and reverse wireless charging capabilities, Apple is also working on a future wireless charging solution that works similarly to the abandoned AirPower charger, but it’s unclear if and when such a product will launch.
