Air India cyber attack: about 4.5 million customer data stolen by hackers

In a statement, Air India said that the specific information from the breach was confirmed by the company only two months after the hack of the Passenger Service System (PSS). The attack cost the company the data of passengers registered with Air India for the last ten years (August 26, 2011 to February 3, 2021). However, it is worth mentioning that while customers’ names, credit cards, passports and other information were stolen, their CVV/CVC (a credit card verification code) data was not compromised, as the company urged passengers to change their passwords “where applicable” to ensure the security of their personal data.

Air India also said it has taken steps to ensure data security, including investigating data security incidents, protecting compromised servers, hiring an external data security incident specialist, notifying and contacting credit card issuers, and resetting passwords for the Air India FFP program.

Air India was not the only victim of the hacked cyber attack, as several other airlines were also affected, including Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Jeju Air, Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines customers whose data was stolen by hackers to varying degrees.
