Agricultural technology company “Kamereo” raises US$4.6 million to connect Vietnamese farmers and small and medium-sized catering companies

The intervention of e-commerce has accelerated the maturity and implementation of the decentralized distribution mechanism of “social group joining”, reduced the purchase cost of agricultural products, and benefited both supply and demand.

According to foreign media TechCrunch , the agricultural technology company ” Kamereo ” , headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, recently announced a US$4.6 million financing, led by the food group CPF Group, Quest Ventures and Genesia Ventures. It is reported that the funds will be used to recruit, build a new warehouse management system, upgrade the user interface and expand to Hanoi next year.

Taku Tanaka, the founder of “Kamereo”, while serving as the chief operating officer of a Vietnamese pizza chain “Pizza 4Ps”, noticed the difficulty of restaurants and farmers in contacting farmers, so he developed his entrepreneurial idea. He noticed that many small catering companies do not have channels to purchase large quantities directly from farmers, so they have to rely on nearby markets or multiple suppliers, and these suppliers often only sell a certain category. At the same time, farmers are disconnected from the end customers of their products, which makes it difficult for them to understand changes in market supply and demand, predict market prices, and adjust production and planting plans. In order to solve these problems, Tanaka created this B2B platform with self-operated warehouses and last-mile distribution network in 2018, and named it “Kamereo”.

“Kamereo” currently cooperates with 15 farmers, including cooperatives, to provide services to more than 400 active customers, including family restaurants and restaurant chain brands with more than 20 stores. Although in response to COVID-19, the Vietnamese government has issued a series of restrictions on residents’ travel and temporary closure of shops, “Kamereo” has maintained an average monthly growth rate of 15% in the past 12 months. Currently, the company has about 100 employees.

Many catering companies in Vietnam use this platform to place orders directly with multiple farmers, and “Kamereo” is responsible for supplier negotiation, order processing, management and fulfillment. Tanaka said that as an integrated platform for multiple merchants and agricultural products, plus the support of self-operated warehouses and distribution systems, ordering through “Kamereo” is cheaper and more convenient than cooperating with other third-party suppliers.

There are many small roads in Vietnam that cannot be accessed by trucks, so the last mile delivery of “Kamereo” is mostly carried by motorcycles. Tanaka said that the main disadvantage of this model is that the number of goods that can be transported one way is limited, so efficiency needs to be improved. Since the delivery staff need to travel multiple times a day, “Kamereo” plans to expand its micro-warehouse network in Ho Chi Minh City, thereby reducing the delivery distance of the delivery staff one-way. At the same time, the company’s technical team is also working to establish an internal system to manage inventory, fulfillment and last-mile delivery, with the goal of minimizing variable costs.

Quest Ventures partner Goh Yiping stated in a statement on this round of investment that “Kamereo” is located in one of the largest food production centers in Southeast Asia. There is still a lot of room for development in terms of providing the best products with home purchases. “
