Organized by the Artificial Intelligence Special Committee of China Anti-Cancer Association and hosted by Chongqing University Cancer Hospital, this conference is the first large-scale academic and popular science forum based on the interdisciplinary aspects of artificial intelligence and oncology in China, aiming to accelerate the application of artificial intelligence technology in tumor diagnosis and treatment through cutting-edge academic exchanges and promoting cooperation between industry, academia and research.
According to the introduction, the conference set up one main venue and several sub venues. The main conference venue contains keynote lectures, cutting-edge sharing and other forms of communication, while the sub-courts open communication platforms such as youth innovation forum, technology innovation forum and intelligent technology clinical application evaluation forum. The whole conference covers various aspects such as AI-assisted tumor screening and early diagnosis and treatment, application of AI in major tumor treatment, and AI-assisted smart hospital construction.

Professor Xu Bo, Chairman of the Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence for Tumors of China Anti-Cancer Association and President of Chongqing University Cancer Hospital, said that the incidence and mortality of malignant tumors have been gradually increasing in recent years, which has put forward higher requirements for early screening, diagnosis and treatment of tumors. Artificial intelligence is a new technical science that studies and develops theories, methods, technologies and application systems for simulating, extending and expanding human intelligence. As a hot research in the field of medical-industrial cross-fertilization, it can provide broader application prospects for the medical field and gradually improve the medical experience and promote the rapid development of medicine.
Take the application of artificial intelligence in tumor screening as an example, it can significantly improve the efficiency of tumor screening. Prof. Xu Bo introduced that currently AI technology is widely used in early screening of thyroid cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer and other tumors. For the screening of small lung nodules, the optimized AI software reads and judges the film more efficiently than the imaging physicians. The experienced imaging physicians need an average of 15 minutes for CT interpretation, while the AI may only take 10 seconds.
As for the application of AI in tumor diagnosis, the emergence of AI can play a balancing role and relatively reduce human errors. In breast cancer, for example, in imaging, AI-based diagnosis of breast cancer subtypes has an accuracy rate of 99%; in the analysis of breast cancer pathology images, deep learning has reached an expert level for the diagnosis of lymph node metastasis in breast cancer; in ultrasound, AI technology can use the physical characteristics of breast lesion images to identify benign and malignant nodes.
“AI can also be used to predict the assessment of efficacy of patients after receiving treatment, the risk of tumor recurrence and metastasis, and factors affecting prognosis.” Professor Xu Bo said that there have been many breakthroughs in related exploratory research internationally, all of which have shown good prospects for application. In addition, artificial intelligence has many applications in tumor treatment strategies. Take surgery as an example, some of the more precise surgeries will affect the surgical process and effect due to the limitation of surgical field of view, hand tremor and other factors. The surgical robot, however, has a more open field of view and more precise surgical positioning and operation, which is conducive to patient wound healing and reduced trauma bleeding, among other things.
“Artificial intelligence is equivalent to the doctor’s other hand, the other eye, helping the doctor to better and more accurately diagnose and treat. For patients, it can improve the early screening rate, reduce the financial burden, shorten the diagnosis time and improve the consultation experience.” Prof. Xu Bo said.
Professor Xu Bo said that the application of artificial intelligence in medicine is developing rapidly and promisingly, and is basically in sync with European and American countries. We have made some achievements in recent years, but they cannot be limited to the immediate future. The application of artificial intelligence in the medical field, especially oncology, is still like a baby waiting to be fed, including the research and development of technologies such as smart hospital, big data platform, pathology histology, imaging histology, etc. is in its infancy, and more experts and scholars are needed to explore and research.
Professor Xu Bo said that artificial intelligence technology for medical services still needs to be further optimized and improved, and the first step is to improve the quality of clinical data and be more accurate. Therefore, standardized full diagnosis and treatment is the basis for establishing accurate models, which is the main link that needs to be improved urgently. Only through standardized diagnosis and treatment, standardized follow-up, the high quality patient data obtained is used as the establishment of computer models to develop accurate and efficient systems for future individualized medicine.
After the opening ceremony, many famous experts and scholars in the field of artificial intelligence and oncology made speeches and exchanges. While presenting the achievements of cutting-edge applications of AI technology in oncology, the conference highlighted the analysis and discussion of the overall development level and priority breakthrough strategies of AI technology in oncology in China, the construction of standardized system of AI technology in the application of oncology imaging and pathology, the training mechanism of talents in intelligent oncology, sorting out the advantages and disadvantages of China in the international development pattern of AI in oncology, and providing advice on It also provides recommendations on the development strategy suitable for China’s national conditions
